Hi everyone just got myself a juvenile royal python around 18" long.
This is mt 1st time feeding him and he took it but struggled to get into position to eat it as a leg was getting in the way and has now left it.
I was feeding him a weaner is that to big?
Do i leave it in with him or take it out?
If he don't eat it how soon after can i try again with another one? |

Hi and welcome to the forum.
If the rat was no larger than the snake's girth, then that's fine. Another way of judging the right size of rat is to weigh the snake, and the rat. The rat should be no more than 10/15% of the snake's bodyweight.
Yes, they can get tangled up with the legs sometimes. If you were offering it on the tongs I'd take it out (using tongs, never fingers) warm ratty's nose with a hairdryer for 30 secs, and offer it again. The warmth may trigger another strike and hopefully this time a successful feed. Or, if he likes it offered in his enclosure, I'd just leave it in with him overnight and he may come back to it. If not, take it out and bin it, and wait until what would have been his next feeding day - it won't hurt for him to miss a feed. Some won't even feed the first time in a new home so he's a good lad for trying. Hope this helps. |

Cheers for all info, i think i shall leave overnight and try tomorrow evening, shame as i was very nervous that he might not take but hopefully he will tomorrow quote:

Hi and welcome to the forum,
as BATS said, he is rehomed and i think he was just playing and not in hunting mode, because it's surprising how big pray he could swallow, the snake will struggle little bit, but eventually it will find it's way to the head of the prey |

1 successful fed, toke him from his tank, and placed him another plastic box, and he strike within seconds and the rest was history.
He still had a weaner but it looked a touch smaller than yesterday's prey.
Just 1 other thing can you handle them after the feed to go back straight into there tank? |

I find sometimes the front feet are a pain, if they are close together I would actually get the tongs pinch the point where leg meets body and give it a yank, dislocate the legs, and pull them backwards a bit. Makes it that bit easier for them to get round.
Congratulations on the feed though, that first one is always such a relief. |

| Great news bet your pleased and had a big sigh of relief.. in respect to handling after feeding since i now feed out the viv as well. once they have finished and the tail of the food has dissapeared, i give them a couple of minutes and gently pick up and return to the viv,where they wont be handled for 48 hours..i have been told 24 hours is ok but just to be on the safe side.. |

I would like to see my snake feed outside his viv, but i'm afraid he will get nervouse and wont eat.
yesterday i had 4th successfull feed, i recorded that on video |
