Firstly, hi...
I'm really glad ive found this forum site it's been very helpful as im a complete newbie....
I am due to pick up my Royal Python currently about 8=10" in length in a week and ive been geekily (is that a word) been reading this forum site for hints and tips...I have 2 questions...
Question 1.....The Viv...Ive purchased a 36" x 18" x 18" Exo Terra viv and have a light canopy, 2 x digital thermometers, heat lamp with 100w bulb and a dimmer thermostat. Now...ive been told to deck the viv out with as much as i can get in there to make my python (monty) happy, how much is too much??? i have loads of wood, fake plants, bark and two hides. It is pretty packed is this right???
Question 2......do i need a RUB or this only for breeding, eggs and young ????
Cheers

Answer 1: This is a question kind of dependant on the snake, my vivs are all minimalistic 2 hides, a few leaves, maybe a branch. If my snakes show off behaviour I add more but if they're doing everything happy enough I leave it as it is to save the cleaning.
Answer 2: RUB's can be used as alternatives to vivariums it is really your choice, a lot of younger snakes get on better in RUB's before being moved to Vivs

Thanks Kelf
i guess its trial and error....pref not too many errors. I get the cleaning bit though....lol. Gonna use newspaper and kitchen towels for substrate with a thin layer of aspen (for looks).

Hello, and welcome to the forum!
In answer to your questions, most people will advise that you start off using a RUB (really useful box)for young royals, using a heat mat and a mat stat for heating, as a 3ft viv will be too big for an 8inch royal. Large spaces make them feel vulnerable and stressed out and they are far less likely to eat in enclosures that are too big for their size, so a smaller living space will be more beneficial while it is young.
I kept my little one in a 12 litre rub to start with, and eventually moved her into a 3ft viv when she was about 2.5 ft, and even still it is packed out with 3 hides, wood, and plenty of fake plants for cover, to make her feel secure.
Saying that, all royals are different, and whether of not they eat is a good sign as to whether they feel secure in their housing or not, but I would think for such a small snake a rub would be good to start with. |

You can heat a rub the same way as a vivarium by putting the RUB inside the vivarium, but it is far easier to use a heatmat and either a pulse proportion stat or a mat stat |

You just push the rub away from the light until one side is colder than the other, you can also cover it with a heat reflecting substance. |

Yeah I'd recommend a heat mat if you're going for a rub though- I had a rub inside a viv and it is a bit of a pain |

You can use a dimmer stat with a mat - a dimmer can be used with any heat source as long as the wattage of the heat source doesn't exceed the dimmer wattage, and it's unlikely to do that. |

If its going in that viv,he said he had a heat bulb for it.You don't really need the canopy, unless you want to use the strips for lighting. |
