Hi guys,

I'm new to both this forum and snake keeping.
I'll start with a question, I promised to get my 14yr old daughter a snake for christmas, but both myself and my husband will help care for it.
My question is I have the opportunity to purchase a young adult or a 3mth old baby. All are captive bred from recommended reptile stores, my vet being a snake keeper thought the baby the better option.
I'll get one of them on the 10th, but first I would like your views on which would be best for handling and general taming.

Thanks
Janie

hi and welcome along,

really does vary, young adults should be established feeders so thats a bonus and also used to people whereas a younger one may not be used to handling.

Really just down to preference as all our royals were fine from the getgo.

What i would suggest is see of you can handle both the snakes and see what the temperaments are like then, then you may be able to decide better

I have 2 of each, two young, who are now around 1 year old, and two who are around 5 years old. The older ones were rescue snakes. Whilst I love them all as much as the other, it is good seeing your young baby's develop into quite large healthy snakes. But, as GMac has said, young ones do not come without complications. I am sure no matter what you decide to do, you will enjoy your new pet, and we are all here to assist where we can

Thanks GMac,

The young adult we went along as we had previously arranged to handle that and some corn snakes..but on arrival when I asked he said that he'd fed them the day before, which I thought a little strange. It did raise a few alarms in my head. But yes handling will give me a better idea :)
I am hedging toward the two babies, and I believe he raised them himself, i'll let you know which and post a picture of the Royal we bring home.

Hi Janie and welcome to the forum. Royals are great!

I keep on recommending this link to people starting with royals - at the risk of being tedious lol I'll post it again, there's lots of info -

Hope you find your ideal royal.

Thanks Lilith,,lol love your user name and that's a great link you posted:)

The only two snakes I ever handled was a small snake that moved at mega speed in my hands ( I didn't like it much) and a Reticulalated Python draped across my shoulders which was fine.

Hi and welcome to the forum
i don't think a retic python is a good idea as it is your first snake they can grow to 25 feets or more and are aggrasive comparing to royals

It is essential that they are not handled within 24 hrs after a feed and preferably 48hrs so don't be alarmed by what he said, and yes you should handle them before buying to check the temperament, I personally like to raise them as youngsters so that they are familiar with me and my scent and have had no problems as a result although I have also taken more mature snakes without problems

Hi Jake,

I have liked snakes, but since that Reticulated never held any. Katana (my daughter) has often asked us to take her somewhere that she could hold one, and asks for her own every year. For some strange reason this year I relented, stranger still my Auntie wants to buy it and she is 103..she is awesome.

I'll post a pic soon :) and aye a real community spirit here!
