Hi,
Now only Feanor hissed at me while his eyes were opaque, I picked him up with no strikes etc.
What i'm really asking is that I read the thread that asks whether snakes have memories and the general opinion was that they don't: that they live in the moment.
Intelligence kind of concluded that a snake lives by instinct, that they don't reason or process thoughts like mankind.
So to move on to my query, by those conclusions, if a snake hisses when approached in his viv, if you pick him up regardless does that snake register the fact that you are the boss, you aren't afraid, and that shows of aggression will not work.
Or in doing so the only thing accomplished is boosting self confidence for future encounters? |

Hi that's a good question
From what I've been told, if you choose not to pick them up when/if they hiss, strike or try to look threatening they will know that using fear or aggression makes you leave them alone but if you pick them up regardless of all that then they learn that they cant scare you off... But i dunno if this is the case with all snakes, I had trouble with my royal striking at me which really put me off picking him up so he did it more often but now that I've started picking him up he's fine with me. |

Hi, I think both - the snake calms as soon as you pick it up (usually) and you gain confidence - also the snake enjoys the armchair walkies afterwards - they must have some memory/awareness/instinct that this is fun, or why would they bang on the viv window wanting to come out?
As you know my Ziska is rather a one (although her wild relatives pretend to be rattlesnakes so it's in her nature.) A big breakthrough came one day when we went through the usual ritual: I went to pick her up, she struck at me (headbutts or velcro bites) - but this time she backed off. (Oh, you again is it?) Lol. |

So have we established that snakes are indeed intelligent?
Not only pure instinct, as afterall nobody can say that being picked up, held and cuddled is natural for a snake :) |

Mine has never banged on his viv to come out the only time he's banged on his viv doors was to try and bite me!
I think they do live in the moment but i've read about snakes that have had preferences as to who they like and who they don't: liking one of their owners but not the other, that sort of thing. But i think they do have memories... |

When I got my first corn hatchlings, I expected a creature, very nice to look at and just plain awesome simply because it was a snake, but with the personality of a terrestrial guppy ...how wrong I was!
From day one they impressed me with their intelligence, curiosity, quirkiness ...lol well I'm just in love with snakes I have to admit.
Aww, Austin, never fear, he'll be asking for armchair walkies sooner or later - snakes know when they're on to a good thing! |

It seems true enough more handling does calm a aggressive snake down :) however i'm not sure banging on the glass can be linked to them enjoying being held. |

Well my lot do when they ask for armchair walkies - and Ziska really does bang hard on the glass with her nose, even when I'm at the other side of the room.
I open the door and a pleased snake falls out ...ready for armchair walkies! |

I know I was a big voice on the other thread but I agree with kelf on this particular topic (banging on the glass) since I am a beardie owner and It has to be said that they can tap on the glass like their lives depended on it, and after asking a few fellow owners what it was all about the conclusion was they weren't very bright because they'd never come across glass before and couldn't work out why since they could see through it that they couldn't walk through it. Then instead of being excited when we open the door like we think they are, I think they're just relieved that the invisible barrier has gone and they can be on their merry way... |

aww BATS, dont take it to heart. You know in your mind how your snakes are, just because you feel they enjoy coming out doesnt mean that they dont enjoy it. My two pastals are always together considering snakes have no feelings and prefer their own company |
