Hmmmm ....
Typical bland media waffling plus scaremongering.
I've read in other reports that there is no reliable evidence as to feral Burmese python influence/depredation in their alleged stamping grounds, but seems like the media do want to find them guilty (Erm, sorry, biased snake owner's opinion here lol.)
The mammals' population levels (if they have really shrunk) could have shrunk due to -
disease gene stagnation development encroachment lack of food ie not enough bunnies for the bobcats getting eaten by native alligators
Eventually (hopefully!) the mammals will increase in number (IF these statistics are reliable!) but, meanwhile, of course, the VILLAIN is -
!!!!!!THE EVIL FERAL BURMESE PYTHON!!!!!!
Despite it being said that the alligators are eating the snakes.
I've said it before and I'll say it again - scaremongering and any subsequent legislation will only encourage irresponsible snake owners to dump their pets.
I'm really pigged off about all this but thanks Jonny as I hadn't seen that report before, and forewarned is forearmed! |

I feel sorry for the big snake breeders in the US, they must be suffering massive losses if they cant transport there stock to shows/expos etc. Although I fail to see how the US are policing the snake ban. There is no border control or checkpoints between states so what is stopping the transport of these snakes? It isnt even directly targeting the problem either. The burmese pythons in the everglades got there because of a flood allowing them to escape from their breeders. The only thing that needed enforcing was the release of the snakes into the wild which was already illegal. simple resolve: data tag all big snakes so they can be linked back to their owner!! No need for stupid import bans!!
Its all very silly! |

Exactly my thoughts on it, I have a dog that has to be chipped and licensed why oh why is this not the case for ALL animals. This wouldn't totally stamp out cruelty and neglect etc but bring accountability to the animals you or anyone else owns. Then the responsible animal keepers can freely move their animals without silly laws and then the policed bit is unlicensed animals and not unlicensed animals not been allowed to be moved between unmanned state lines and still able to release these into the wild without any possible chance of tracing.
I would (and do) happily pay for compulsory licensing and chipping for animals. It also provides me with security that if for example my dog was to escape it would take the dog warden about 2 minutes to have my details either through his chip or through the unique dog tag he HAS to wear while outside. I would then be able to be reunited with my dog very quickly or if I have been neglectful etc be fined for my stupidity. |

Im torn on this. I have to say on the face of things thre are 2 different issues here. 1, the ban. 2, the everglades issue.
Although linked they don't effect each other now. It's not like people will drive down there from all over the country to "dump" their snakes.
That said, i think tighter control over big snakes isn't such a bad thing. Maybe even for all snakes, reps and or all animals. Any responsible owner wouldn't bat an eyelid if a chip or register was required. The only thing i could compare it to would be a dog register. I agree though how would you enforce such a ruling. Baffles me.
I will one day get a "bigger snake" im sure. So be intested to see what happens in the long run.

Irresponsible people won't bother to make the journey to the Everglades to dump snakes if they find the ban makes keeping or transporting them difficult - they'll just flytip the poor old snake anywhere convenient one dark night ...imagine what that could lead to ...
Worst case scenario I know, but who would have thought that woman in Grimsby, in the recent thread 'Sickening News' could do what she did? There are some heartless people out there. |

Florida resident here. We're talking about a State who has a ban on putting pregnant pigs in a pen. Lots of idiots out here. Yes, we fought tooth and nail to have a certification process to own large snakes (over 8 feet). We got it for 2 years. In 2009, a law was passed where you cannot sell large snakes to somebody residing in Florida that doesn't have a special permit. Also, you can't adopt or rescue a large snake without a special permit. And all large snakes have to be chipped as part of the permitting process. Then in 2011, idiots in Florida Congress passed the ban because "the Everglades problem is still unsolved" - well, duh!
Unfortunately, we are still saturated with snake-phobic Floridians who would take a rifle and shoot the "dangerous" 2-foot racer snake 50 yards across the lake from their backyard... so yes, they want a ban on large snakes.
Very frustrating to say the least. |
