Hi guys i have a young python which i got a couple of weeks ago! she has just had her 2nd feed! first feed i left mouse on to of her hide and she took it! i tried strike feeding the 2nd time i fed her but she wasnt up for despite been told she was a strike feeder but could be she's still settlin in so i left on hide and took it no probs! my question is regardin feedin in the viv as i hear lot of people talkin about feedin in a tub outside viv and was wonderin why this is better! also when do you put her bac in viv as i no ya cant handle for 48hrs aft! plus do i aft heat the tub and how big should it be?? is it not easier just to feed in the viv?? thanks.... |

feeding in a rub saves them taking in any substrate with their food. only of mine now feeds in a rub, the others i put down a tea towel an place the rat on there. when feeding in a rub once they finish eating i gently tip the rub towards the viv an the climb out.

i have always fed in the viv and never had any problems. once in a while they take a bit of substrate in but this would happen in the wild |

Hi Daz,
With both my Boa and Slinky I feed in a separate tub..quite a big one and deep. Both strike feed and a coup;e of mins after swallowing I scoop them up in my hands to return to their faun. They soon learn what the tub means lol they go on the hunt :) Never a strike at me tho. |

Hi, welcome to the forum and congrats on the feed - my first royal, Shahi, used to like feeding from his climbing branch. Incredible when they strike isn't it - talk about a walk on the wild side! |

No need to move her to a separate tub to feed if you're doing well in her viv. The only concern is ingesting the substrate, which royals are usually pretty good at avoiding. They do sometimes get a piece of substrate stuck to the food, though. But this can be mitigated by a piece of cardboard or some such to put the food on.
I feed in a separate tub because I feed live rat. My vivs are decked out with lots of places for a live rat to hide that the snake can't get to, so it is safer to feed the snake in an empty container that we can easily monitor. |
