Hi all

I've heard so many conflicting stories regarding bites from royals and/or other, non-venomous snakes (the Boas, Corns, Kings etc.)and how painful they are, with some saying it doesn't hurt at all to the others that say it feels like their thumb was being torn off...

I've not been tagged by mine yet (not to say he hasn't tried) so i was just wondering what some of your views on it are?

When mine was going through his snappy stage i was told to just let him bite me, but I cant willingly let any animal bite me! Lol I've been bitten by a vast array of animals, weirdest being a Duck!! But i just couldn't gonna let him do it!

Hey. I haven't been bit yet either. I am hoping to get bit sooner rather than later though so the sheer fear of being bit goes away lol. My girlfriends dad was tagged a week ago. Didnt even leave a mark. Think the actual shock is worse than the pain itself.

Slinky has never hissed, Fea did once while in shed. That time I did pick him up, no strikes..but next time if he hisses i'll let him alone, no need to now as I know how docile he is :)

My belief is that if you respect your snakes, it reduces the chances of a bite :)

LOL - I've been bitten by a duck too ...well, they've no teeth, but you can get a nasty suck from a duck!

Most royal python bites are to do with feeding response. The royal makes an honest mistake - and in my case, mine was a stupid mistake -

http://www.theroyalpython.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6551&SearchTerms=gore,galore

Sometimes you can get a nervous or defensive royal - I've no experience of this but I do have experience of my gopher snake, Ziska, whose wild relatives mimick rattlesnakes and whose behaviour is an ancestral pattern.

Ziska spent her first months unhandled in a shop and her behaviour, even when she's asking to come out, is like this -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upPXpYMnC48&feature=endscreen

(Actually this is a bull snake, close cousin to a gopher) and you just go on in and pick her up. Ziska may strike, but only a velcro bite or headbutt. She's only twice drawn blood - once on feeding day when I moved a piece of bark away from her hide and didn't realise madam was waiting impatiently to dine, and once when I was showing her off to someone and stupidly pointed at how her throat puffs out. Scratches only. Snakes would generally prefer to retreat than bite - unless they think there's a meal in the offing lol.

Yes, snake bites can be painful, but with good luck and, more importantly, good management, they can be avoided.

I've never heard a royal hiss, and the only bite I experienced was a little corn when I was about 10 but don't remember if it hurt or not.

The duck had a kinda jagged beak and the little sod bit me when I picked it up, it was a neighbours duck!

I respect him, I respect all animals... I think they deserve it.

I was once chased by a herd of cows... Lol

LOL - cows! Oh boy!

Must say, cows are very curious - they'll often come trotting after you, but you can usually yell at them and they'll get out of your way. Only time this didn't work was with an aggressive Charolais who butted me into the nearby canal ......I don't swim well but was rescued by a passing barge ...

I used to keep ducks but round here some wild ducks seem to rear their young up one end of the town and then trail them down to the river. Helping to escort one mother duck and young, she went into a patch of weeds on an industrial estate and it fell to me to coax her out. Ouch! She was like a mamba!

Ah, royals do hiss sometimes, but only heard it twice from Shahi. Royals really are placid and sweet-natured imo.

Ha I do l love wildlife! When I was a kid I saw an adder while on a camping trip and on a school trip we ran into a grass snake.

Mines placid and chilled out now and were best friends I'm already eyeing up my second and third lol

I think i would rather I got bit while he's still small and young though

Just as BATS has said, most bites are from a feeding response and not from a real desire to hurt you. And yes, I can confirm that when a big royal sinks her teeth in, it does hurt. For me it felt like I had some glass cutting into my thumb.

try not to worry about it, TBH it was my fault as I offered her a second rat inside the viv on the end of some very short tweezers whilst she was blue.

Normally she is fed out of the viv, and she was on thos occasion also, but I had put her back and didnt want to disturb her again and with a rat left over, I thought, hell lets see if she fancies a snack. So, whose fault is it? she saw a rat, she smelt a rat, she felt the heat off my hand so she went for it. Yes, it was my fault.

Not been got yet by mine but in a way I cant wait for that badge of honour amongst snake keepers. There are 2 badges you have to collect before you can declare yourself a full snake keeper, you have to get pooped on (check) and you have to get bitten (one day).

mines 5 months old and I've only had him for 3 weeks. at first he was striking at me every time i tried to handle but I've not been bit yet. he seems to be settling down now and once i pick him up he's fine. i just let him strike until he realises I'm not food and then he lets me pick him up. until he's properly settled in i am wearing gloves to pick him up but once he's in my hands i take the gloves off.
