I have weighed loki again this morning and he has put on loads of weight!! i weighed him a few weeks after i got him at the end of november and he was 149g. Today he is 241g!! 100g in 3 months is quite good i think (sure someone will tell me if this is not as good as i think it is). He does eat every week without fail apart from the one week when he was shedding. Last medium mouse gets used up today so going to move him up to the next size. xx

Sounds a good weight gain to me Curiously :) and his feeding record cannot be faulted :)
Slinky is having the last small mouse on Sunday, then on to mediums, I can't find it now but a top breeder said on a website that he feeds mice until the snake is a year old, then rats. He reckoned that the calcium etc is higher in mice and that rats cause obesity if fed at 7 day intervals, so i'm doing like you and move up the mouse sizes:) |

I'll have to try and find it Daz, it was an interesting article. It does fit with what I have been told by my vet and the likes of Triple 8, both of mine are on mice.Slinky soon to have the last small mouse (I'm loathe to throw it out lol) and Fea who now takes large. |

hmmm im confused now. my Ceasar is around 4-5 months and I've got him feeding on rat pups every 7-8 days. is this too early? he doesn't struggle getting them down but it takes a lot longer than when he was eating mice. |

It's horses for courses guys it's only better for them to have rats from a feeding point of view since it's easier to feed an adult one rat each time than two or three mice, and as for what age they should be before you switch it doesn't really matter but the earlier you do it the more weight they will put on in a shorter amount of time as rats usually have a higher fat and protein content |

Imo, Hayes, the sooner you get them on rats the better so don't worry.
But, apart from my personal viewpoint -
According to this chart a young rat (neonatal/juvenile ie pup, fluff) of the same weight as a small mouse has less fat content than a juvenile (small) mouse.
Rat pup weighs 6g approx, fluff 19g Small mouse 9g approx

Bless him - just his way - it's the forum motto - 'they're all different' but it really is true. Sounds like he's doing fine! |
