Hi im going to be the owner of my first snake on friday, a baby male yellow bellied royal and thought id join the forum after looking through posts for advice. So here goes my first question, will this list of things i have bought/or going to buy be a good enough setup for my little fella when i pick him up friday? (im planning on setting up viv on thursday so its ready)heres what i have/still to get vivexotic vx36 viv 36"x18.5"x21" 75w ir heat bulb heat mat to cover third of tank 11"x17" habistat dimming thermostat digital dual readout thermometer humidity guage 2 or 3 hides water bowl large food bowl which i was going to place central and incorporate the 3rd hide(to hopefully get him to feed from to reduce risk of ingesting substrate) branch and plants to make the viv busy since hes just a baby dont want him stressed. havent decided which substrate to use yet
so how does that list look and have i missed anythin?
thanks carl |

Hi and welcome To the addiction
I'd forget the heat mat thermo blocking on the heat mat may cause burning on the royal as there Heavy bodied snake
Maybe try and up your ir bulb to a 100w or 150w if the sell them
Also a bulb guard is a must
Also you may find a 3ft viv may cause you feeding issues Although a Heavey planted viv may relieve stress
Other will be along soon with more advice :)

hi and thanks i will buy a higher wattage bulb and see how that goes, i was told by the pet shop that a heat mat was needed lucky that was on the to buy list lol, and yeah i forgot to put heat guard on the list i knew i needed one of those. as for the viv size the pet shop have him in a similar sized viv and told me hes a good feeder and he seems to be a chunky little thing, although they have him in with a female too would that make any difference to how he feels in a bigger space?
quick question about the bulb fitting, does it have to be a ceramic fitting when using ir bulb for heat? thanks carl |

Hi Carl, and welcome along
I run a 3' x 18" x 18" with a 75 watt, which holds fine. I would step up as Del recommended though, as the bulb is pretty much flat out most of the time. Dimming stats are very good too, I run both ceramic and IR with them. You will need the ceramic bulb holder, as the plastic ones can't cope with the radiant heat.
As mentioned, ditch the matt.
I've had to pack the viv very heavily to get him settled again, as he started to lose confidence and stopped eating, so it's worth keeping an eye on it. Plenty of hides and vines should keep everything sweet.
It will take a while to get everything up to temp, and don't rely on the reading from the stat dial as these are horribly inaccurate (you've covered this though...)
My money's on you having a second snake before summer is finished..

Lol I was very tempted to buy the female too but she was £300 the bloke in petshop said it was something to do with the morph and she can be used for breeding, maybe if they still have her when I have some more cash she would be an investment I suppose :-) |

Hi, welcome and Congrats on choosing a royal
Your list looks great and I'd have to agree with Del re; bulb not mat. Personal preference as I've stated before, I've always had better luck with a bulb setup over a mat.
Wattage wise, go for the biggest you can get (it's a man thing I guess? ). I'd be more in favour of running a 150-200w bulb on a stat @50/75% capacity than a 75-100w flat out.
Only my opinion, but half the fun will be finding out what works best for you and your new snake
Good luck |

| make the viv very, very busy, a 3foot viv can be a bit too open for a baby royal. as with the rest, go for a larger ir or a ceramic. |
