Personally, unless you were going to be mass breeding and piling 'em high, i can't see the need or purpose of using RUBs. I mean, a snake stuck in a RUB is generally seriously devoid of tactile stimulation unless being handled and to me it smacks of non-commitment on the part of the owner.
It is my opinion that its much better to buy a decent vivarium and furnish it properly. The snake will have room to grow and its own 'domain' and will, frankly, look a whole lot better than a plastic box..
Not necessarily true. The hides you provide are a million times more important than the type of enclosure they are in. Their domain is the hide, the space is just open space. Its actually quite common knowledge that Royals in RUBs actually do better than ones in vivariums, specially the more fussy ones.
Vivariums are for the benefit of the owner and nothing more, a snake wants its needs met (warmth, food/water, safety) everything else is for the benefit of the owner.
I personally dont use RUBs for adults but have for hatchlings that require smaller spaces to feel secure and thrive, its only when they are bigger I consider them ready for a vivarium.
I actually have a hatchling house snake in a plastic clip lock lunch box, because a RUB is too big for it right now, but I have all manner of tubs, RUBs and a spare vivarium available and he will live wherever he is comfortable, so its not non-committed, its over committed, ready to meet the needs of the animal before my own selfish wants to display them.
This is a 18 Litre RUB I used for a hatchling Boa, as you can see its kitted out just as well as a vivarium and my Boa thrived in there, she is now in a 6 foot vivarium and I never see her, she is always hidden away.

The question you asked, wasn't really a rub vs vivs debate, more a what to buy to get you setup, for a young snake.

Will do. He's been quite nosy at the moment, whenever I am in my bedroom he is popping his head out and coming out to watch me. |

This is the difficult bit, wanting to get your hands on them and having to leave them alone to settle in. |

How long would you give him? Being as he is older and more used to handling would you still give him the same as a baby? |
