Posted - 02/09/2009 : 12:40:48 Hi Peeps
I have recently got a R.Python and i cant get the temperature to stay up.
I have so many questions that I need answering and would really appreciate your help, as books arent giving me all the answers
I have only had Heffa for 3 days now, she is in a big viv and I have placed the heat mat on the inside, underneath the aspen, as when the heat mat was underneath the viv, the heat was not getting through. The viv is wooden.
I originally placed the sensor to the end of the mat, inbetween the hot and cool areas (middle) but this meant the heat mat was on all the time and not flicking off by the matstat. So I moved the sensor nearer to the "hot hide" and the stat is working and turning itself on and off, however this is affecting the tank temperature alot.
I have had problems getting the temp up to the 80's. The highest temp I can get it to is 79, but last night it dropped to 69, cos the matstat was turning on and off.
I am really concerned about the heat, as I know it should be at least 80.
Please advise what you think is the best way to resolve this.
Heffa striked for me yesterday when I was checking the aspen in her cage, and she seems very curious and has her head to the front of the hide, does this mean she is hungry? as she is due her feed tonight.
In the last 2 days, I have seen her yawn twice, this has only been when she is at the front of her hide. Is there a problem?
I really would appreciate your help and advice. Gina

Posted - 05/09/2009 : 12:20:44 I hav now moved the temp probe for the cold thermo, to underneath her bed under the aspen, so it not against the cold wall surface...ges this will mean it will read a true reading.
the hot probe is still at the side , just at the back of her hide (inside).
They are reading:
C: 72.1 H: 87.8 The matstat has currently switched off |

Posted - 05/09/2009 : 11:40:49 sorry, the temp probes are at the side of the rub(not viv) lol. I hav put pics on for you to see |

Posted - 05/09/2009 : 11:39:43 I checked them at 10am and they were the same and havent budged. She is settled under her hot hide. I thought havin the rub in th viv would help wiv the temps, prob is my room is so cold, so the outside is not normal room temp

Posted - 05/09/2009 : 11:35:36 Is the cool end not too cold for her tho, the temps now are:
H: 91.4 C: 69.4
Should I put the probes underneath the aspen then, rather than at the side of the viv, near the plastic (cos that is where they are now) |

Posted - 05/09/2009 : 11:31:04 you wont need the lamp yet, will be ok for when he is big enoughth for the viv.the temps seem to be rising ok.As long as the robes are directly above the mat thats fine, could take a day or 2 to settle the temps. |

Posted - 05/09/2009 : 08:52:27 Ok, I have got the rub all set up and took pics which i am trying to put on. I did some monitoring of the temps and they are as below, still not getting hot enough
At 6am, I originally had the thermo probes at the front of the rub and temps were H: 76 C:71 (The mat stat probe was inbetween the two hides, just slightly off the heat mat side)
6.10am, moved the thermo probes to each side of the rub, behind the hides. Temps: H: 91.6 C: 72.4
Moved the mat-stat probe near the hot hide, on the heat mat-flicked off Temps: H: 85.8 C 71.4
6.20am, Temps: H: 84.4 C: 71.1
6.30am, Temps: H: 82 C: 70.5
When matstat went back on, Temps: H: 81.9 C: 70
6.43am Opened tank (matstat off)- Temps: H 83.7 C:69.6
6.50am - Temps: H: 82.9 C: 70.7
6.55am - (closed viv door slightly) Temps: H: 83.1 C: 70.9
7am - Temps: H: 82.8 C: 70.5
As cold side is closest to the window, I moved the heat mat to the left side of the viv (closest to the window) in the hope that the cooler side temps would rise
7.30am Matsat probe at front of the hot hide under aspen, hot thermo is at the side of hot hide, midway to the back ontop of aspen. Cold thermo is at the side of the cold hide, near the back
Temps: H:77.7 C:73
7.45am Temps: H: 80.2 C: 71.6
7.50am Temps: H: 81.1 C: 71.4
8am Temps: H: 82.9 C: 72
8.05am Temps: H:83.1 C: 72
8.15am Temps: H: 85.5 C: 71.9
8.30am Temps: H: 88 C: 71.8
I have a red UV light, am I going to need to install it? |

Posted - 04/09/2009 : 15:57:07 I have this problem, doesn't seem to matter what I feed Gary he always sits with his head poking out the hide. Maybe just inquisitive??? |

Posted - 04/09/2009 : 13:58:03 she seemed ok after she caught the tongs, she still ate her meal ok. She still has been keeping her head at the front of her hides tho, so Im wondering if she is still hungry. I got the digital thermos today, so gonna set her all up tomorrow, hopefully with no problems. |

Posted - 04/09/2009 : 00:22:36 looks like you have a got all the advice you need for the minute. Did she take the feed ok when see caught the tongs? unfortunately you were just unlucky that the place were you bought your snake and equipment have gave you the wrong advice and equipment for your snake. Which I 'm sure has caused you and your snake some un-necessary stress. But don't worry once you have the rub all set up and she is settled in you eventually be able to enjoy her and worry less. And your in the right place for good advice.. Welcome to the forum by the way. Good luck. |

Posted - 03/09/2009 : 14:45:38 you need one of these as he will be mega stressed by a big viv http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Exo-Terra-Flat-Faunarium-Pastic-Terrarium-Medium_W0QQitemZ260466257881QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Pet_Supplies_Reptiles_Spiders_Insects?hash=item3ca4ffafd9&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
or use a rub (really useful box)available from staples, here is a guide on how to set on up,i think you are being sold a lot of equipment you dont need and getting the wrong advice from the shop. http://www.theroyalpython.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1451 |

Posted - 03/09/2009 : 14:37:45 this is the bottom line,at that age you dont need all this fancy lighting ect,all you need is to take out of the viv and put him in a fuanarium with 2 hides awater bowl and a mat that covers a third of the floor space under the fuanarium and run that with the stat you got,you could add some false greenery to pack it out and give it coverage,oh and a digi thermometer.Thats it.Will post some picks in a minute |

Posted - 03/09/2009 : 14:10:37 And the actual make of the thermostat is "Habistat".
Heffa is about 2 and half month to 3 months.
