I have the royal in glass viv.
The temperature in the viv is 74 F hot side 68 F cold side.
I use a heat mat and a bulb.
I cant raise the temperature of the heat mat because i put it in the viv not under it so i'm afraid to burn the snake if i raised it too much to heat the whole viv.
the viv is 80cm X 60cm X 40cm
Please help me friends.

Personally I would drop the mat and use either a ceramic bulb or an IR bulb attached to a thermostat. I have an IR bulb running 24hrs controlled by a stat and Tia seems very happy with the arrangement.
As previously said, if you want to keep the mat then put it outside the viv and run it via a stat.
Congratulations on joining the royal family.

Hi Tawfik congrats on getting your snake a "moss hide" is just a hide box left in the cold side with spagnum moss inside it that is damp "NOT WET", which raises the humidity and helps snakey shed, but if you haven't got any moss a damp face cloth will work just as well, or moving the water bowl into the hot end. There are "how too's" posted in the D.I.Y section that will help

Hi, Tawfik, hamsters are fine for royals - chicks have no nourishment in them. Feed a hamster that weighs between 10/15% of your snake's body weight, every 5 days if the snake is under 400g, every week if the snake is between 400 and 800gm. I'm assuming your reptile shop sells frozen hamsters in sizes from birth to adult - they can tell you the approximate weight.

Hope this helps.

One more thing, can I feed my RP hamster instead of mouse, because there is no mouse available in the city here, there's only hamsters or little chicks

1 - Thermal blocking in lay terms is the sheer weight and amount of snake in contact with the mat causes the mat to get hotter as the heat has nowhere to disperse. It leads to very severe burns. Royals or any heavy bodied snake should never be in contact with a heat mat. Unless the thermal blocking is occuring at the stat probe then it can be missed and will overheat regardless of whether there is a stat or not.

2 - Glass is a rubbish insulator, Polystyrene is a very good idea.
Tawfik47 Posted - 28/03/2011 : 23:20:33
1- What is the thermal blocking risk ? what do you mean ?
2- The roof is sealed, I'll try the polystyrene.
Thank you guys for the help, this is my first time having a snake :D
i read alot but still facing some troubles :P

The above is good advice.

Try insulating the viv with polystyrene on 3 sides and underneath. Also, is the roof a mesh or sealed? - If mesh, you may need to cover some of it to try and retain the heat.

what wattage bulb are u using? you could buy a higger wattage bulb

you don't need a heat mat as well as a buld. bulbs, guarded, are better as there is always the risk of thermal blocking when using a matt. but if you do continue to use the matt it should be under the viv so the snake doesn't come into contact with it

also glass viv are a pain to try and retain the heat. i had a glass one for one of mine for a couple of months but got rid of it. wooden vivs are alot better for keeping the heat
