Posted - 24/09/2009 : 01:09:38 hi all well picked up new snake tonight. and it is in a bad way. old shed still on head a bit of scaring on back. looks like it hasn't eat very much skin hanging of it. but not dehydrated. oh yeah and mites.!!!!
my own little rescue snake. if it had of stayed were it was it surely would not have made it. Now I can give it a chance. I'm prepared for, it may not make it. but i'll make sure it goes out fighting if it does.
When i picked it up it was in a 3ft foot glass viv. one hide and a bit of greenery . heated by unstated un guarded white reflector bulb..
It is now in a 9lrub heated by stat-ed heat mat. paper substrate . two hides and a small water bowl. (hospital conditions) quarantined in separate room from my other snakes. Due to mites and poor condition we. (my wife under my instruction. reducing risk of contamination to other snakes)give it a warm bath and a good look over. Scaring on back is a burn mark.. after warm bath i thought no time to wait a week to settle. I really need to get some food into it as its very weak. so assist fed a pinkie. only thing i had small enough. all my mice are to big. looks to be a bit sore around the mouth as well but couldn't be sure. I'll have to get another look at that in a day or two. I'll took a couple of pics to be able to document its condition. i'll get them up in a bit. No name yet i think i'll leave that for a bit too. not sure of sex. at a guess i think male. pure guess based on slightly longer tail. If/when its all better and healthy i'll bring it to get it checked.
I guess i should say that the young fella i took it from has only had it just over a week. He swapped it for some corn hatchlings that he had left from his own corns. so it would have been in a bad way when he got it.

Posted - 05/12/2009 : 01:12:20 Hi all. well i think i will make this the final up date on Dahomey. He shed last night and although it was not complete it was pretty close. I sat for an hour last night and watched him go through the whole process (which was great to watch) In the end he looked like the phantom of the opera as he still had half of the shed on his face. and a tiny bit on tip of the tail. I helped him with those little bits but apart from that he done very well. considering i had to completely assist with the total removal of his last shed. I'll try and get a picture of him up in the next few days to end the thread. thanks again to all.
And don't worry BE i'm not planning on going any were and I will always help in what ever way i can. |

Posted - 01/12/2009 : 01:23:36 I think it is coming to the end of the dahomey up dates. he is in shed at the minute but eyes had cleared mostly so i offered him a medium mouse again. a lot of interest but no strike. so i left it on top of his hide and continue feeding others. Mouse was gone in 5mins. so that is non assist feed number 2. I'll post one more update after he has shed to let you all know how that has gone after is last needing full assistance.
It has be a long journey for him but one were he has come out good on the other end. Though looking back it has only been just over to months. It feels like so much longer. thank you everyone for all your support and advice. And if any one knew comes along to read this thread and they are having trouble with a snake/hatchling not feeding. Just remember this wee fellow would have surely been dead if i had not got him when i did. Patience and persistence was the key. Never give up for the rewards can be plenty. |

Posted - 25/11/2009 : 18:38:06 hi all. well decided to move Dahomey into a viv at the week end. have assessed him closely over the last couple of weeks and i am sure that there is no RI so thought i'd give him a more natural home. (still planning to bring him to vets for a check up) So anyway on with the big news. after having assist fed him from pinkie mice to rat pups i thought i might try him on a mouse. feeding night was last night for everyone. so set out my mouse for Gaia (still not on rats) a Weaner for Freyja, Large pinkies for the corns Sniper and Niobe and rat pup for Dahomey and an extra mouse to try him with
I left him to last and offered him the mouse. There was a lot of interest put he just sat there. so i set the mouse on top of a hide and offered the rat pup. not so much interest. I just had a feeling that this could be the night. so I removed both prey items and gave the mouse a good blast with the hair dyer. Re offered a lot of interest just watching tongue flicking etc... 15/20mins past of me doing the mousey dance thing when out of no where Bang! a super fast strike and quick coil to constrict. he had struck the mouse in the middle of his body. after another 10mins of him trying to figure out what to do with it and him dragging it around the viv he started to move away from it. Awh! But i was not for giving up. i removed item again and gave the head another quick blast and re-offered hoping he would strike a bit lower and figure out that head first was best. 2mins in to re offer. Bang! again great strike and constrict. he held it for a few minutes and then moved his mouth around and found the head. YEAH!!!!! that mouse is no more and Dahomey has had his first ever totally un-assisted feed. with a super strike and constrict. so excited for him. |

Posted - 15/11/2009 : 02:33:03 Hi all, just a we up date on Dahomey.
This last week he has really gone through a personality change had has came out of the depressive slump in seemed to be in. He is out and about his rub more and not just sitting idle. The rest head propped up has stopped and no star gazing..... I had him out tonight for a quick look over and he is really looking well and hydrated. body is starting to fill out a bit mow and he is weighing in at 80grams. he appears a lot more interested in everything now and a lot of tongue flicking. As for the clicking it appears to have cleared for the minute. from i have had him through all his problems i have been running his rub on high end temps 34-28 yesterday i finally brought them down to 32-26. He is showing more interest in food but still not managing to even attempt it himself, but that will come in time. call the vet on wednesday to chat with him about what i thought and to talk about when i could get dahomey down. Unfortunately with everything else going on at the minute. with my granda, and then we start moving house tomorrow, and a 60hr week in work this week it will be the end of the month before Dahomey gets to the vet. but with how he is at the minute i'm not as worried as before.
just quick wee not on Gaia and freyja. they are both doing well. Freyja had a lovely clean shed to night, measures 28" and weighs 258g and loves her weaners. ( and this is the girl who wouldn't eat at all as a hatchling) Gaia weighs 220g and is still being funny about her food. still on mice and has struck for anything in ages but has been taking it when left in viv. I will be picking up Kanu my pastel in the next couple of week once we get settled in the new house. i know he is on medium mice and eating and shedding well. My 2 corn snakes are great to and hungry little so and so. eating 2 pinkies every 5 days, just not big enough to move up to fuzzies.
hope all is well with every one. I will probably be of line for a week or so now until we get broad band sorted in new house so next time i post it will be from there where i well hopefully have starting putting my rep room together. |

Posted - 11/11/2009 : 00:33:02 thank you Rachel and like wise. its not easy.
Have time for quick update on Dahomey. managed to get a rat pup into him on the 7th so happy about that and he is weighing in at 78g full at the min, still keeping and eye on weight not really putting it on as fast as i would hope. Still appears to be in good form and is happy to be handled when lifting him out to clean rub. I will get him to vets as soon as i can. don't think bad of me for not having got him to vets already, i feel guilty enough. |

Posted - 09/11/2009 : 15:22:59 I'm sorry to hear about your grandad... it's understandable that he is your priority at the moment. My grandad is also extremely ill in hospital at the moment, so you have my sympathy. |

Posted - 07/11/2009 : 21:29:23 sorry haven't been on in while. I have been at my grand dads bedside in hospital since last saturday. so haven't managed to get dahomey to vets yet. have just come home tonight for a break. it has been a though week so far and we are still waiting for my grand dad to pass on.
dahomey seems to be a lying idle a bit more with head propped up against water bowl or hide. starting to worry a bit more especially as there is nothing i can really do at the minute. sorry. |
