i think this maybe the most argumented thing with royals, what is best a heat mat or a heat lamp or both?

only when my room feels cold the mat feels warm thats probably down to me being cold. the man who i bought my snake off ha an un-thermostated mat on in the viv i brought it all home and put a thermometer on it and it was running at 150f. GP thats a good point you made

Exactly, if it feels warm to you its too warm for your snake.

that's because your stat and mat should be set at less than human body temperature.........

sorry there was one on the darkside which had pics of a snakes belly burnt due to no attention to the heat mat. my heat mat 90% of the time doesnt even feel like its on

Yes, I didnt think of that. Im currently leaving a lamp on in my room 4pm-9pm to keep the daylight constant.

But from an aesthetic view, I dont bother.

BUT if you're wanting to control the photoperiod/daylight hours to artificially create an earlier breeding season, or with a youngster to try to prevent brumation.......

fair enough i suppose everybody has their own preffered set-up i may try and set up a viv like how you have explained to see how my snake fairs with it thanks for the info.

Nope, I dont see the point.
james200789 Posted - 22/01/2010 : 17:57:03
do you use any light for display purposes that's one of the main reasons i have a basking light.

a friend of mine uses a basking light through the day and then an IR or ceramic during the night not to disturb the snake. is this a good idea or just a waste of time??

i got the heat mat set at about 80f just for the night so i can turn the lamp off

Heatmats in vivs are fine for youngsters/small bodied snakes like corns.

For adults, either a heatmat under a RUB or bulb heat in a viv.

My god - The poor thing :( I'm heaving at the thought [the images have either been removed or the account is inactive.. which i'm glad about to be honest, i don't think i could face seeing them].

That has REALLY scared me. I use a heatmat with my Velvet, she's still in a small viv & still quite young, but i have unprinted news paper covering the mat in the viv.. the thought of that catching fire terrifies me :|

So, is a RUB a better option for adult pythons, with a heat mat UNDERNEATH the RUB - or a viv with a ceramic bulb? Actually - regardless of the python's age/size - which is best??

I've always been curious about the heating aspect of snake care & what's the best option because you hear so many horror stories about bulbs AND mats malfunctioning. We can't be by our snakes 24 hours a day and it worries me that something could go wrong while i'm in work and there's nothing i could do about it.

What a terrible story, thanks god the pics weren't there, I don't think I would have liked to have seen them.

Yeah all mats are under my Rubs because of they are in a rack

I have never heard any horror storys about mats only storys I hear are mats with no thermostat to be honest
Blackecho Posted - 21/01/2010 : 18:43:19
I've seen and heard some horror stories about thermal blocking, really wouldn't want to witness it with one of my snakes so wouldn't take the risk personally.

However, if you're talking about under a RUB, you should be fine
