i think this maybe the most argumented thing with royals, what is best a heat mat or a heat lamp or both?

For me, heat mat under 800g or so, then bulbs after.

I don't think its that controversial. A heat mat is not suitable for an adult.

I use IR bulbs 24/7.

They are very good, im not sure how long they last though.

I dont see why you should need a mat and a bulb.

I've seen and heard some horror stories about thermal blocking, really wouldn't want to witness it with one of my snakes so wouldn't take the risk personally.

However, if you're talking about under a RUB, you should be fine

My god - The poor thing :( I'm heaving at the thought [the images have either been removed or the account is inactive.. which i'm glad about to be honest, i don't think i could face seeing them].

That has REALLY scared me. I use a heatmat with my Velvet, she's still in a small viv & still quite young, but i have unprinted news paper covering the mat in the viv.. the thought of that catching fire terrifies me :|

So, is a RUB a better option for adult pythons, with a heat mat UNDERNEATH the RUB - or a viv with a ceramic bulb? Actually - regardless of the python's age/size - which is best??

I've always been curious about the heating aspect of snake care & what's the best option because you hear so many horror stories about bulbs AND mats malfunctioning. We can't be by our snakes 24 hours a day and it worries me that something could go wrong while i'm in work and there's nothing i could do about it.

Heatmats in vivs are fine for youngsters/small bodied snakes like corns.

For adults, either a heatmat under a RUB or bulb heat in a viv.

i think i have seen the pics before and they are not pretty but those injuries are from an un-thermostated mat so they just run flat out 24/7

a friend of mine uses a basking light through the day and then an IR or ceramic during the night not to disturb the snake. is this a good idea or just a waste of time??

Personaly I think any light (apart from red if you're using red bulbs) is a waste of time. I would just have the ceramic on 24/7.

do you use any light for display purposes that's one of the main reasons i have a basking light.
