Hey guys,
some of you may know me from the corn snake forum, thought i'd join up as the OH has been hinting like crazy for a royal as a bday prezzie! His bday is Nov 9th but i want all the facts before i give in. Please keep this on the hush and don't mention it on TCS because it's a suprise! Hope this forum is as nice and friendly as the other one :) |

Just as friendly Peanuts - and welcome!
Royals aren't too hard to keep as long as you get the setup spot on. You need the same things as corns , heat mat, stat, hides, rocks branches etc to climb - Royals need a little more humidity than corns - mist the viv every now and then or get a hide with damp moss to aid when shedding. Royals are well known for their non feeding, but most will feed if their setups are correct and they aren't stressed in any way (just moving them from the shop or breeder can put them off food for a couple of weeks) Have a look through the previous posts and you'll get the idea.
Well will keep this quiet on The Corn Snake forum - But what if your OH has a look on here? |

Welcome Peanuts. Don't worry our lips are sealed. I used the same tactics on my OH and she caved in in the end too.
Any probs just ask. These guys have helped me and Sherman loads |

Hello Rhi, I highly recommend Royals, just be aware that they can be a pain eating, just don't panic, they're not dustbins like Corns. |

I'm telling the other half!
...only joking. I got my Royal for a birthday pressie and it was one of the best presents I've ever had, apart from Casper and Wilbur of course |

Hey Peanuts. Welcome.
I got my first Royal last week. He is a CB07 called Tibo.
I did a lot of research before getting him as I was concerned about the poor feeding label attached to Royals. However if you get a captive bred snake from a breeder this is far less likely to be a problem. I would strongly urge you NOT to get a WC or CF Royal which you can often find in pet shops. Not only are they generally poor feeders, they often have health problems too.
My Royal fed first time for me, just 2 days after getting him, so I am well pleased. But he has always fed well his previous owner says. Lets hope it continues!
He is far more placid and easy going than my corn or king snakes.
I found this site useful, so take a look:
http://www.kingsnake.com/ballpythonguide
So go on, get your OH a Royal, you know he deserves it! |

Thanks, i'm sure that will be very helpful, definately going for CB and i am looking to find a local breeder so i can go and watch a couple of feeds to check all is well in that area.. just bought a book case from argos which i'm goin to convert into a viv stack with 5 (2'6x1'9x1'2) vivs. I think these will be big enough to last both corns, hog and possibly royal for their lifetimes.. any opinions gratefully recieved. :) |

a viv 30" x 14" would generally be suitable for a snake up to 44" long - or not even 4 feet in length - but would house your collection for a few years and the hoggie for life! |

That bloomin hoggie isn't gonna do much growing if he doesn't start eating soon!!!! Yeh i wasn't sure if they would be big enough to last the royal or if the corns get on the large side, but it will do till we get a place of our own and some room for a proper viv stack. We will still have peanuts 3 foot viv and our 54l RUB though so i am sure with the stack and those 2 we'll get a few years untill we have to invest in some more proper vivs. Cheers for the advice GP. :) |

sorry, i automatically thought the 14" was depth and 21" was height - didn't think bookcases were that deep? be better if they are though |

tell me about it! It's costing me a small fortune each time I have to buy a deep one strong enough to house all my text/reference books. |
