Hello everyone.

I've just bought my first snake after much reading, a three year old female Royal Python. She's been settling into her new home for the last couple of days and after having a good old explore of her tank on Saturday evening spent most of yesterday happily curled up in her hollow log. We've named her Princess with her being female and a Royal!

I've just seen the post of what can happen with a heat mat and no thermostat, that's awful! The shop advised me that a thermostat wasn't needed when we bought the viv setup. As it turned out, her tank was warm enough with just the bulb during the day and no heating at night (it's in the living room) so the mat's off anyway, but it'll be staying off now until there's a thermostat for it.

Sorry for the long first post!

Hi Wolfspirit, thanks for the welcome.

I'm hoping to get some pics of her soon. It's not been easy so far as she seems to like it in her log and we've decided that if she's asleep or hiding we should leave her alone. I did look in on her last night about midnight-ish and she was nosing around then, but of course it was dark!

Thats the best time to catch them...i tend to leave mine be most of the time right now, but i never normally disturb him in the daytime, only when i clean out his viv...

Hi Chris, if you have a bulb anyway, there is no need for a heatmat.

Hi Blackecho

I was thinking that I might need the mat for overnight in winter, as the temperature in the living room can drop to about 15c when it's really cold. I know it's likely to be warmer in her viv, but if it's 15c outside it would she not get too cold without some heating?

I use a red heat bulb and leave it on 24/7, other people use ceramic bulbs which give out no visible light.

If you have to turn it off at night then yes you would probably need some other form of heat.

Thanks again. As the mat's in there already I'll look at getting a thermostat for that. I figure if I set it to about 25c it'll stay off during the day while the bulb's on and just come on at night if the temp. drops. Does that sound OK?

Hi everyone

I've just ordered a thermostat, the local reptile shop only had the on/off ones, not any suitable for a lamp. After a bit of thought I think I'm leaning towards retiring the heat mat altogether and going for a nightdrop 'stat and a red bulb that can be on 24/7 without disturbing her sleep. I've already fitted a lamp cover, didn't want her burning her nose!

Hi

I've had an email today to say that the thermostat (Microclimate B1ME) and red bulb have been despatched, so Princess should have her new heat setup in a day or two. The heat mat will be coming out of the viv when it's cleaned next.

I also have a quick question about hides. She's in a 4ft viv with the lamp at one end and her water bowl at the other. Her hollow log is about two feet long and placed in the centre of the viv as suggested by the guy in the shop. Most people seem to think that there should be a hide at each end though, would the log be better cut in half with a bit at each end of the viv?

i would leave the log if there is room as it will be a good aid to shedding and maybe get her a couple of hides, one for each end, you could make your own....
