Hi all!

I'm new to Royals, but not new to many of you, and I need some advice regarding my two new additions, Kaylee and Jayne, my cb12 Royal Pythons I bought from CREAKS yesterday!

When I bought them, I was informed they are assist feeders, but once started, they both eat fine, and having had experience in assist feeding already with corns I've owned and been asked to help with, I didn't find this at all daunting, and got the pair, a male and a female.

However, the issue I now have is that after purchasing the pair, along with a third that my friend who I took with me purchased at the same time, we were informed the man we bought from is renowned in the CREAKS circuit for selling WC animals, as well as animals full of parasites. I was informed that if I palpitate the stomach, that my two snakes will feel quite squidgy (which to me is confusing, because compared to my myriad slender rat snakes, they do anyway, even when healthy!!) and this is a sign of intestinal worms! I was advised to get some Drontal Puppy Solution for internal parasites, and to put a few drops in their mouths twice a week for two weeks, or a few drops of the stuff in their water for the same length of time.

Does anyone else have experience with treating Royals for worms with this method, or is there another way? I do have two vets I could take the pair to, but they have not defecated, so I won't be able to take faecal samples with me. Should I worm them regardless, due to the reputation of this seller, just to be safe? I don't want my first experience of Royal keeping to be marred by the fact that my first pair could just waste away and die because of internal parasites!

Any help or advice would be fantastic as to what I should do at this stage!

Thanks in advance, and I look forward to hearing from you guys!

i would not advise using any dog worming treatments as these are designed for use with dogs and not reptiles.
best thing to do is keep them separate from your other animals with strict quarrentine an all that stuff just incase they are WC.

i would just feed as you would normally then when they poo get the sample off to the vets for testing or speak to your vet an ask if they would treat for worms as a precaution.

congrats on the new additions

If you go to an exotics vet they can sort out sterile tubs for collecting a sample for testing. Also available at most chemists but you might have to pay for them there.

Worming medicine is generally the same stuff but dosage is specific to each animal and unless you know what you are doing then the exotics vet should be the one to make the call on dosage.

Thanks guys! Soon as they've settled in for their week, I'll feed them, and get to the vet to discuss options. I've felt the two, and the male is definitely softer to the touch, whereas the female is a little harder, like her muscles are stronger. She is also more weighty. I've taken both their weights, and will keep an eye, to see if they deteriorate or not C:

I have very little clue as to how on earth you could feel for parasites, Duke feels soft some days and hard others, depends on if he is tensing, what he has eaten and how long he has gone without a poop. Though testing for them might be a wait too, waiting for them to drop a 'sample' can take months. If you suspect worms though it can do no harm to worm them, provided you do it right and in accordance with a vets instruction. Its recommended you worm them yearly anyway not that I ever have.

Yeah, I thought it was a weird suggestion from the guy o.o Both me and my friend thought it was a weird suggestion to palpitate for them, because to me, they always feel squishy, lol!

I'll take them down to the rep vet at some time in the next two weeks or so, when I can get some time off work to take them. They are separated from the rest of my group, so hopefully I can get some answers about them soon.

Quick update!

Fed them both yesterday, and must say, they both took without much, if any, encouragement! The female pounded it and bust the rat pup I offered, the male needed a little more coaxing, but also swallowed his rat pup no problem! Will still save any poop that comes to get tested, I think, especially the male. He is much softer in feel to the female, very different.

Anyway! Thought I'd update you all! Hopefully there will be some pictures to show them off soon!

you could encourage a poo by giving them a bath in the sink, i would double check this but i think the water needs to be at 32 degrees C. best of luck

@lotabob i didnt know that royals should be wormed every year, wonder if the worming medicine should be bought from a vet or if a petshop like surreypetsupplies would stock it
