right im totally confused .com ???? My royal is in a 4ft wooden viv shes totally happy swaps hot to cold hides regularly in the day and night , eats fine and is healthy . My prob is though she has a 150 watt red light heat bulb attached to a thermostat which is set at 85 should this switch off once it reaches that temp? as so far it hasn't ...ever???? or am I being a total knob lol???? The gradient temp is at 75f at the min im reading this from my digital thermometer which is at the bottom center of viv next to thermostat reader but my round dial thermometer is reading 80f ???? cant quite figure whats right and whats not????? surely though if my royal was to cold she would be spending more time in her hot hide ????? as I mentioned she is using both regularly . so im thinking as shes happy somethings not working properly??? where do I start? be gentle im still new at this :S |

All is working normal don't worry, unfortunately the numbers on the thermostat mean squat! they're terribly unreliable so you've done the good thing by buying a digital thermometer to check. Just adjust the temperature based on the themometer reading and pretend that the numbers on the thermostat dial aren't there, just pretend it reads "High" and "low" instead ^^ |

You can gradually increase the temperature according the the thermostat (as Kelf says ignore the numbers other than as a guide for which way to turn it to make it hotter) until you get the correct temperature on the digital thermometer which will have its probe directly under the bulb. |

No the bulb will stay on id imagine your using a dimmer stat for your red bulb in which case the light just dims down to maintain the set temps |

carlb1981 the thermostat im using is a Microclimate Ministat 300 - On/Off thermostat for controlling up to 300 watts of any non-light emitting heat source.???? so not a dimmer??? |

You're using the "wrong" thermostat, it will work and I've used one myself before in dire need but unfortunately it will keep turning on and off when it reaches the right heat. Which means you'll have a little mini strobe disco in there which 'could' stress out the snake and will cut the life of your bulb in half. Best bet is to get a dimming thermostat which instead of cutting the power when it gets too hot just reduces the power so the bulb gets dimmer, hence dimmer stat xD
The heater your stat is designed for is a heat mat :) |

very interesting!!! it killed one bulb within two hours of having it! I took it back to the shop who were more than happy to replace the bulb , the whole viv was a full set up from a fantastic reptile shop locally so came with thermostat could this just be a mistake on there part ??? when boxing up ??? also as ive said above it hasnt gone off yet even though it was set at 80-85f??? and from what Ive been told a 150 watt bulb should have by now?? |

I think that maybe because you have your stat probe in middle of viv instead of reading it directly under the heat source so you will probably not be up to temp that is set on your stat you might find that if you put thermometer probe directly under the bulb it will be way too hot |

Thats the problem with kits and id say, they should know which stat is for what etc.Take the stat back you have, and change it for a dimmer stat. Then set everything up again with the new stat etc.
quote: You can gradually increase the temperature according to the thermostat
Do it this way, ignore the numbers on the stat,Only go by what your thermometer says.

For best results put your themostat probe and thermometer probe under the heat source the closer to that it is the easier to control your hot end temps |

You mean they might have put the wrong stat,in another stats box?or just sold you the wrong stat :)
Whatever the reason take it back and swap it over. |

As your asking them to look at what they have sold you, why not swap the IR 150w bulb for a 250w ceramic. It gives off no light at all. |
