Hey guys! If you have my facebook you'll have seen the status I put up last of my now demised exo-terra canopy (the unit that holds the lights)
I made the mistake of assuming a meagre 50w bulb would be perfectly at home within the unit - having not read the manual or instructions I wasn't aware that the recommended maximum is only 25w.
This caused the plastic around the bulb to warp and melt without me noticing it - eventually one of the bulbs was broken by this and appeared to me to be blown - I grabbed it and twisted it to take it out and replace it and the whole thing shattered in my hand, glass went everywhere and as you probably know Exo Terra's have mesh tops so I couldn't rule out that some may have gotten into my gecko tank. The gecko's are now residing in a 50lite RUB until I can clean it out and make sure it's safe again.
Just thought I'd post my experience here incase anyone else has assumed the canopy can hold more heat than expected.

Oh dear :P silly mistake also there should be a big silver sticker on the back.Saying max bulbs etc etc.
The old models used to melt the bulb holders,with the correct bulbs inside.I even had one unit crack and fall to bits.I got all mine replaced by exo terra
The new units have fans on the side now.To blow/suck built up heat out etc.
