| Hi I am new, I have got a one year old male royal python, very active on a night but will wait till we leave the room before he comes out fully out of his hide. I have had him for 5 weeks, he comes out and loosely curls up and normally takes about 10 minutes before he relaxes and then wants to explore the living room. He is a very shy, friendly and sweet python but from the day I got him, he is not eating. They said at the pet shop he was eating fine and no problems. I have each week put him into a feeding box and offered him a rat weenier, he will go straight up to the rat have a good smell then change him mind and then starts looking for a way out of the box. He just wants to come out for a slither around. I have not weighed him as do not have the scales big enough, but looks fine. Do they go one strike from eating when it's the breeding season? Just worried. He definitely knows that when he's in the box it's feeding time? Just don't want to worry, I know most royal pythons go no strike and not eat, but just need reassurance that it's ok :) |

You needed to get weights really before you can say he's ok not feeding.

| lay off with handling until he has eaten a couple of time's an next time offer the food in the viv if he doesn't take straight away leave it in the cool end over night |

| Yup I second that. Mine eats in viv at same spot and only refused twice. If Oscar strikes he eats. Are you feeding same as he had at pet shop? |

| I too have a shy eater, just sneak dinner into wherever he normally lives, do it quietly and a t night and then go to bed, by morning it should be gone. Also check your temperatures are warm enough as without enough heat they know they cant digest their food so just dont eat (32°C hot end). If he still doesn't eat then we can look more at your setup, see if there is anything putting him off eating. |

| If he doesnt eat in his viv it could be the prey item that hes not interested in. I had mine eating rats for half a year, then it went 5 months without feeding. I gave it a multimammate (royal pythons wild diet) and he went crazy for them. He's even strike feeding again. He hadnt done that since he had been on mice. |

| Well, my royal has still not eaten as yet. Tried leaving the rat in his viv at the cooler end but did not take it. Have not handled him as much and felt that he has been getting better when I have got him out, not as shy, so that's really good..pleased about that for him and me. Got a new hide in the viv the other was really too big for him and need to make sure he feels secure. The new one is treated bark hollowed out, he loves it, I'm happy and he is too. Hope that makes a difference for him. With him not eating the rats should I try mouse instead...any other suggestions? :) |

Its quite hard as a new owner to try and not panic, but this is what Royals do on a regular basis, they aren`t stupid and they will eat when they are hungry, so you just have to go with it or you will just stress yourself out.
This might help you relax abit, yours hasn`t eaten for 6 weeks, i have a female who hasn`t eaten since October 7th.
What i would recommend is a feeding chart with a column for weight, always weigh after they have poo-ed so you know the empty weight. The only time to worry is if they haven`t eaten for months and they start to lose weight. |

| Thank you so much for the reply, you made me feel a bit better, just trying to do everything right in the viv with the thermostat, not handling too much. The royal that I have is lovely and very found of him just don't want to loose him by not finding out the correct information needed :) |
