Hi Peeps
I have recently got a R.Python and i cant get the temperature to stay up.
I have so many questions that I need answering and would really appreciate your help, as books arent giving me all the answers
I have only had Heffa for 3 days now, she is in a big viv and I have placed the heat mat on the inside, underneath the aspen, as when the heat mat was underneath the viv, the heat was not getting through. The viv is wooden.
I originally placed the sensor to the end of the mat, inbetween the hot and cool areas (middle) but this meant the heat mat was on all the time and not flicking off by the matstat. So I moved the sensor nearer to the "hot hide" and the stat is working and turning itself on and off, however this is affecting the tank temperature alot.
I have had problems getting the temp up to the 80's. The highest temp I can get it to is 79, but last night it dropped to 69, cos the matstat was turning on and off.
I am really concerned about the heat, as I know it should be at least 80.
Please advise what you think is the best way to resolve this.
Heffa striked for me yesterday when I was checking the aspen in her cage, and she seems very curious and has her head to the front of the hide, does this mean she is hungry? as she is due her feed tonight.
In the last 2 days, I have seen her yawn twice, this has only been when she is at the front of her hide. Is there a problem?
I really would appreciate your help and advice. Gina

Hiya welcome to the forum...
we need to know your exact set up to help..also any photos will help.. how you are measuring temps etc..
a heat mat wont heat the air by the way, you need a ibfrared or ceramic for that both being used with stats.. |

also it would be helpful to know the size of your royal and size of the viv, as well as the things wolfspirit has mentioned :) |

I will need to get all of this information and come back to you, as I am at work.
What specifics do you want, then I can print off the list and write down all the answers. Im sorry to be a pain :) |

hi and welcome to the forum, are you using a dial thermometer? You only need a thin layer of aspen above the mat or the heat will be blocked,as said already,a pic of the set up is needed really. |

that's okay :) will need: Type of thermometer (ie: digital/dial) place of themometer/probe type of thermostat (and probe placement) depth of aspen size of viv size of heatmat length/weight of royal pictures (if poss) of set up...and royal ;) i think that's pretty much the basics...
it pretty much depends on these factors as to the advice that may be best for you :) oh, and welcome to the forum :D |

I spoke to the petshop where I bought the viv, heating mats, etc and they have explained that the reason the viv is not heating up, is because of the room temperature, as my room gets quite cold. She is ordering a UV light and cage for me, and explained that the one she orders will be suitable to heat the size of the viv.
Im sorry, I still not have all the information available. but can answer some of the questions above.
thermometer - dial, however looking to get digital on the net now!!
place of probe - was in the middle of the tank, however heat mat was not turning off, so placed on top of mat by the "warm hide". I now have the mat on all the time until I get the UV light to ensure the heat remains in the tank.
type of thermostat - matstat (on/off) depth of aspen - approx 1 -2cm over mat, at the cool end - approx 6-7cm thick, thought this would be suitable for burrowing.
size of viv - unknown size of heatmat = unknown (is just under 50% size of the tank tho)
length/weight of royal - unknown
I will try and get some pics on here soon :)
I fed her for the first time last night. She caught the tongs tho, so I hope she hasnt hurt her mouth. I kept an eye on her last night to see if she kept opening her mouth, but she seemed ok.

snakes dont need uv light as they are nocternal and do not need uv rays, these usaly come as a strip light and flicker and will stress the snake, unless you mean a infrared buld and then you would need to buy a dimming thermostat which controls light.Just one more tip, through your thermmometer in the bin,the dial ones can be 10 degrees out. do you know how old it is,where abouts are you, they may be a member near by who could help! |

ok. Where is the best place to get digital thermometers?
The viv does feel cold and when the heat mat flickers off, the temp was dropping to 65/69.
I asked the lady about the UV light and wouldnt I need to switch it off as they only require a certain amount of light, she said to put it on a timer. Do the infrared bulbs not provide light then?
There are so many things out there, that Im getting really confused about what to get, as I just want the best for Heffa :) |

this is the bottom line,at that age you dont need all this fancy lighting ect,all you need is to take out of the viv and put him in a fuanarium with 2 hides awater bowl and a mat that covers a third of the floor space under the fuanarium and run that with the stat you got,you could add some false greenery to pack it out and give it coverage,oh and a digi thermometer.Thats it.Will post some picks in a minute |

looks like you have a got all the advice you need for the minute. Did she take the feed ok when see caught the tongs? unfortunately you were just unlucky that the place were you bought your snake and equipment have gave you the wrong advice and equipment for your snake. Which I 'm sure has caused you and your snake some un-necessary stress. But don't worry once you have the rub all set up and she is settled in you eventually be able to enjoy her and worry less. And your in the right place for good advice.. Welcome to the forum by the way. Good luck. |

she seemed ok after she caught the tongs, she still ate her meal ok. She still has been keeping her head at the front of her hides tho, so Im wondering if she is still hungry. I got the digital thermos today, so gonna set her all up tomorrow, hopefully with no problems. |
