Ok, so we all know that Ziggy is a finicky eater, but after just getting him to take two strike feeds, he has reverted back to not taking anything.

The first time I thought ok, maybe he jsut doesnt want it - it's no big deal it's only one feed.

The 2nd time, I was a bit more concerned but decided to leave it.

The 3rd time I tried to assist but he doesnt seem to want that either - same again the 4th time.

ANd now tonight I have just spent nearly an hour trying to assist feed but he is getting it back out.

The last time I tried before I gave up I more or less had the whole thing down his throat, but he was determined that he wasn't going to eat it and managed to get it back out

Is this a sign that he just doesnt want to eat - as he did accept an assist feed with no problems before???

Any suggestions gratefully received.

what size of food are you trying to assist with. i was having the same problem with assist on dahomey when i tried a rat pup. no for his size he really shouldn't have had a problem with it put no matter what he just wasn't going to take it. thats why i gave him 3pinkies in a row as they are a lot smaller and easier to get down. has he lost any weight do you know.?

is his weight holding steady?

if your worried you could as a last resort i guess try him with live?

You know he's capable and happy to strike feed, so I wouldn't be too hasty to go back to assist feeding, its very stressful to both of you.

Is he losing weight, if so, how much?

I have 2 snakes that haven't eaten in a month now, its just a Royal thing, as long as they're not losing significant weight, they're fine. Could well just be to do with this change of season and cooler weather.

I had been assist feeding with very small mice, which he was taking.
I bought small pinkies as well but he is adament he isn't going to eat them.

I weighed him on the 29th Sept he was 219 grams, which was a gain of 50 grams, since his last fast.

I weighed him this morning he is weighing in at 203 grams so has lost 16 grams in 14 days.

Is this drastic???

Oh, I think he has had a poo in that time - so perhaps its not as bad as it sounds.

Hi Karen, the weight you had for 29th Sept was not correct and the weight after the poo will be, so look at it that he has not lost 16g as he will obviously be lighter having pooed...

As BE says, if they are not losing significant weight i would not worry,.

I fretted like mad over Oscar when he was not feeding, he would not even take a multi,

but he is fine, and now i have accepted that for now he is doing what he wants not what i want him to do..lol...so i offer him first if he refuses one of the others gets a bonus..

I agree about the assisting, your going to stress and he is going to pick it up...and he will stress as well..

of course again, if your still worried you could try him with a live mouse in his rub...just take everything out if you do so he can see it and you can to..

maybe a food swap as Anne suggested would be a good idea?

If Ziggy drops below 160g I would worry and assist again.

I really dont want to go down the live route - my son was distraught when I brought the last live mouse home.
And on a personal level, I still dont think he would be interested.

but does that include the weight he lost when he pooped after shedding?

i guess what i am trying to say is he would drop weight when going to the toilet..

if you take out the pre poo weight at your last weigh in it would only be 3 grams..am i right here?

BE your better at maths than me

what does he weigh now?

He was 203 grams on the 13th Oct - now weighs 197 grams so lost 6 grams in 5 days.

All I am trying to establish is what would be a dramatic weight loss - is a gram a day drastic???

Mainly as I have no access to live, and find assisting easy.

For all I don't agree with it, you could try the no water thing people are harping on about?

I think a week rather than a day but yes that's the gist. Not something I'd do unless at my wits end. I don't think Ziggy needs anything like that yet personally.
