Hi, my name is Vicky and I live near Rochester in Kent with my partner, 2 children, 3 dogs, 1 cat, 1 (soon to be 2) rats, 2 guinea pigs and 2 horses! My daughter Lucy is 10 and has wanted a snake for ever, I always believed that snakes were not suitable pets for children but believe I may be wrong now My friend grew up with snakes and said that a royal python would be a perfectly good pet for my daughter - my question is 'would my daughter be the perfect owner for a python?' I have so many questions so will have a read through some posts on here and probably bore you all with more questions! |

Hello and welcome to the forum. There is no reason why a Royal Python can't be a suiable pet. You may want to consider that you could be looking at a 40+ year committment, what will happen to it if she goes to university etc? |

Thanks, I secretly would love to get a royal as much as my daughter does - I just don't want her to know that or I'll never hear the end of it! |

Are corns easy to handle, my friend has had snakes for years and said she'd never come across a nice corn? |

Corns are easier to maintain if anything, they are slightly quicker to handle than Royals. |

I think I'll show her some pics and try and find out more about other snakes, we are in no rush to get one as it is not her birthday until June so she has plenty of time to read up all about their care etc. I would prefer a royal personally but at the end of the day it will be her snake not mine. I know there is no 1 perfect starter snake but I just want her to get one she can handle comfortably - for both her and the snake! Can anyone recommend any good shops/breeders near me, I'm near Rochester in Kent |

heya and welcome
i've replied on your other thread, just out of interest did your friend keep mainly royals? i'm a boa girl really but wouldn't necessarily advise getting one of them as a first snake (but only due to their potential size ) |

Hi and Welcome, I have a corn and three royals, they are all generally docile and easy to handle although as above the corns are much quicker!! I guess the other consideration is the corns are diurnal and will be out and about during the daytime whereas royals are nocturnal and will be out more on the evening and nightime, I have to say that I would choose a Royal and will probably have lots more as they are both fascinating and addictive and generally have a lovely temprament, whatever you choose enjoy and there are lots of people here who can offer advice if needed |
