Hi,A mate has a royal python who has not eaten since september. i have 2 royals that are both strike feeders and have given him all the advice i can from braining, heating up food with hot water and hair dryer to leaving food in viv over night(tryed small tank also with sheet over to make it dark)he has also tryed different feeding times.About snake set up ect at the moment snake is in a large flundrum (plastic tank) with heat mats on bottom and side. kitchin roll on floor. branchs and plastic plants for cover water bowl 2 hides.(he was in a 3 foot viv with light and dimmer stat cold end 80 degrees hot end 90 degrees 2 hides water bowl plastic plants)he has been in flundrum for 2 weeks as thought it may be stressed in larger tank as snake only 2 foot long i think his snake is about 2 years old. any other ideas appreciated friend not got access to p.c so got as much info as i can. thanks stuart.

Can the snake move away from the heat source if needed (the mat should only cover 1/3 of the bottom of the tank)and I presume it's statted?
2ft long at 2 years old seems a little....well small, do you know the weight of the snake and what food is being offered?

YES THE HEAT MAT IS STATTED AND THE SNAKE CAN MOVE AWAY FROM HEAT IF IT NEEDS TO. LAST TIME HE FED IT TOOK A MEDIUM MOUSE. I DONT KNOW THE WAIGHT OF SNAKE AS HE HAS NO SCALES. MY FRIEND SAYS IF HIS SNAKE DOES NOT FEED SOON HE IS GOING TO TAKE TO VET FOR CHECK UP AND FIND OUT ABOUT FORCE FEEDING ANYONE DONE THIS? AS I CANT GIVE ADVICE ON FORCE FEEDING AS NEVER NEEDED TO DO IT, I KNOW IT IS A LAST RESORT BUT I AM WORRIED HE WILL STRESS SNAKE OUT OR HARM IT.

Force feeding should only be done by a vet, and is the last thing to try when the snake will die if you don't.

Another thing you can try is to remove the water bowl for week and then offer a wet rat.

I have assist fed before, but would go to live before going to force feeding. We are still in the breeding season though, I have several that haven't eaten this year yet, but are fine and not losing significant weight.

I would suggest your mate buys a set of digital kitchen scales from ebay for a fiver.

I would only starve a snake of water as a very last resort personally.

HI ALL. THE LATEST ON MY FRIENDS SNAKE IS THAT I AM LOOKING AFTER IT AND LAST NIGHT I KIND OF TRIED ASSIST FEEDING I DID NOT DO A LOT THOU! I HELD THE SNAKES HEAD LOOSE AND GENTLY RUBBED A PINKY ON HIS MOUTH I WANTED TO TRY A PINKY AS HE HAS NOT EATEN FOR SO LONG AND HE OPENED HIS MOUTH AND I POPPED IT IN, (NOT FORCED) I USED MY FINGERS AS NOT TO HURT THE SNAKE THEN GENTLY PUT HIM IN HIS TANK TO LET HIM FINISH IT IN PIECE. RANG MY FRIEND HE IS WELL HAPPY HOPEFULLY HE WILL STRIKE FOR A FLUFF NEXT WEEK BUT WILL NOT BE ASSISTING WITH ANYTHING BUT A PINKY AS DONT WANT TO HURT HIM A LEAST HE HAS EATEN, EVEN THOU HE HAD A BIT OF HELP.

As be said he really needs to get scales. I personally am amazed that a two year old snake is only 2ft long. normally past that at 1 year old. Also as mentioned it may be fast due to breeding season. Fair play for attempting an assist. but if it is not lossing weight i wouldn't bother just yet. wish him luck. get scales and keep an eye on the weight. handle less.
