Hi, Just wanted 2 say hello. We picked up our first royal a week today. We have spent the last 6 months setting up a viv and doing various research so hopefully she is happy in her new home. She is called Keeva & is about 8months old. Not really sure she is a she but we were confusing the kids so they decided she would be a girl as Im out numbered 3 boys to 1. I will be be needing plenty of advice in the coming months & as Im new 2 having a snake some questions may be fairly basic so please bear with me. We have not handled her since bringing her home & she is fairly active from about 10pm. Does this sound normal & when would you advise trying to give her her 1st feed? Also what is the best way 2 go about defrosting & actually feeding her as I have read conflicting advice all over the net. Thanks for any gratly appreciated help |

firstly hi and welcome to the forum and congrats with your new snake. most advice would be to leave her a week or two to settle anf then feed. her behavoiur is normal and natural as royals would come out at night to hunt. and she will be exploring her new home. I personaly leave food items out in rep room to deforst for a couple of hours. then give them a quick blast with the hair dyer for 20sec or so focusing mainly on the head. then offer from a pair of long thongs holding it a few inches away from snake and an inch or so above ground height and giving it a bit of a wiggly. doing this and hopefully she will strike and constrict around the prey.
do you know what size of food she was on before and what to gave her. if you think she appears settled you could try and feed her tomorrow and if she is out and active after 10 then that would be the best time to try. If she doesn't strike but appears interested you could leave the prey in her viv over night to she if she takes it. if not then remove it in the morning, bin it and don't try again for the next five days. the above info is if you plan to feed her in her viv. some members use a feed tub/rub rather than feeding in the viv and I'm sure they could advice you on the best practice for that method if you ask. |

Hi there Grace and welcome sounds like your doing all the wright things and she seems to have settled in ok and spurs advice is sound. I am one of them he refured to i feed mine in separete plastic rub the only thing with that is handeling after feed easy way is not to if your lucky after thay have eatern put the rub next to the viv and they will go back with a little guidence most of the time they can not wait to go back into there viv's thats where they feel safe and not stressed.I still strike feed but i use a diff way to spur i defrost normally and then when its time to feed useing the tongs place the head and shoulders only into some boiled water for few secs so it's warm and a little wet and with any luck within a few min they strike mine if there not in shed mode 10 to 14 days 2 med each. prey depends on the size and weight of coures hope this helps TTFN. |

Hi Grace and welcome I hope you enjoy your new royal, keep her in a quiet location and as above the advice is good, I feed in the viv I defrost my rat weaners in a freezer bag in warm water and then when thawed I warm the head ith a hair dryer before feeding, feel free to ask anything you feel you need to. |

let use know how it all goes and if you are not used to snakes the chances are you'll jump a bit when she strikes at the prey as they are that fast. but you soon get used to that |

Hi, just to keep you all informed, when we went to feed her tonight we noticed her eyes have turned milky and she is looking a little dull so I guess she is due to shed. We left feeding her as I didn't think it would be the right time. We have upped the humidity in her viv by misting with a spray bottle and we are just sitting tight now and hoping she doesn't have a bad shed! |
