Just registered recently so thought it would be nice to introduce myself and my pets.
My name is martin and ive had pets all my life from living as a child with my parents to present day married with kids and my own house, always wanted to keep snakes but mum would never agree to the idea when I was at home and my wife had a bit of a phobia of snakes so its been hard work to get one in the house but with the combined efforts of me and 2 of my lads we've managed it
My nephew had mentioned that the royal python he had he wanted to sell so that's the one I bought, his name is earl (I say he but I actually have no idea what sex it is at the moment)
I also have 2 german shepherds nala and ghandi and 2 parrots, 1 yellow naped amazon (sophie) and 1 senegal (barney) both which I reared from 5 weeks old so well imprinted on me
That brings me onto another snake ive always wanted, the brazilian rainbow boa which I will research with your help hopefully till I feel am ready to look after one and then the hardest bit will be persuading the wife to let me keep another lol
Look forward to speaking to you all very soon and sharing pictures and ideas

Hi, and welcome to the forum - I know what it's like, other people in the household objecting to snakes. I got my own place in 1999 (still good friends with ex) and, having seen a friend's garter snake react to cats, still didn't get my own snakes till last year (corns) and then my first royal in July. None of them are afraid of cats! The two species commune regularly through the viv windows, which I keep taped, just in case someone manages to slide them ajar.
Your partner may not be as phobic as she thinks. My ex will actually sit on the bed with a snake (despite silly remarks about worrying will I get eaten ) although after seeing Buffy misbehave herself (copiously) on my lap, I think now he's more afraid of getting dumped on than attacked. I think a royal is a good snake to get if there is anyone nervous in the household; it's placid and chunky and appealing and not quite so slinky and slithery and fast as other snakes.
Good luck with the BRB! I'm sure you'll get it! |

hi and welcome to the addiction. if you want to look at some rainbow boa pics, pop across to the sister site the rainbow boa forum, and they ahve loads on there lol i agree with bats, with royals being a god starter snake, but the only prob i have found with taming people with royals is that as soon as you say python they freak and do not want to even go near it. so i find that my corn is better as he his nice and thin, and then get them into royals lol |

Welcome to the forum and the highly infectious addiction, I'm like you, and had to work hard on my wife to convince her snakes were a good idea, got there in the end though.

Thought I would post a few pics of earl and his viv for you all to see
He is in an 18" square EXO TERRA viv at the moment, seem happy enough in there, great feeder and extremeley friendly even to the point of if I leave his viv doors open whilst am on the computer at the side of him he will crawl out onto my legs which can be seen in one of the pics, also weighed and measured him yesterday and he weighed in at 260grams(edited now ive got scales that work correctly) and is bang on 24" long so according to the weight/age chart I think he may be a tad older than was told not that am bothered in anyway tbh as well chuffed with how he has been for this first month ive had him
Again any feedback or advise would be greatly appreciated/taken

Earl coming out to play

Hey and welcome Martin. That's a gorgeous Royal you have there.
Well done on convincing the wife to "allow" a snakie in the house.
I'm still trying to get my hub interested in reps. After 3 years, I think he's taking a shine to my new little Royal - YAY |

do u mean he is 372.0 grams and is 24 inches, as 3720 and being 24 inches seems very short, and very heavy. he doesn't look 3720 grams looks lovely though, congrats edit: he also does not look 3 years old, at 3 years old he should be at least over 3ft |

I have reweighed him and I think I need some new scales as still showing 3420grams with no decimal point showing so changed units to ounce which came out at 8.7 ounce which when converted online made 246 grams so figure that one out deffo looking like I need some new scales and also looking like you are right, also was having a chat with the old owner over crimbo at family do (he`s my nephew) and his mum was reckoning that earl was 2 this christmas just gone and not 3 but declan was quite convinced that he has just turned 3 so who knows, shame theres no hatch certificate
Was kinda hoping someone would pick up on this so I can get to the reality of his age, etc good old forums

well, the wieght sounds alot better if it was 370 grams or there around. although at 350 grams, and 24inches, he does not sound like he is older than 1 years, as my male that was hatched in april may, is weighing in at 330 grams, and is about 30 inches plus from the pics he does not look underweight, so could not be any older than 18 months at all |

Yup - my Saada hatched Apr/May 09 and she's 400gm - that's small but she's been well looked after, great little feeder (only had her since Nov) and they are all different, as the weight chart shows.
Earl looks fine! |

Hi, Martin, we overlapped there - you know one thing's just struck me about weight and feeding. I notice on your other post re temps you mention Earl's been fed every fortnight but that you feel he should be fed more frequently. That is exactly the case with Saada. The owner (a very caring and diligent young guy) had taken the advice of the shop who sold him Saada, and had also been feeding her every fortnight. I too upped her feeding times to every 5 days, although soon she will go to every week.
Just a case of different advice and viewpoint isn't it- like you I favour more frequent feeding for snakes of that weight - and also no criticism meant to Saada's and Earl's previous owners! |
