I've joined up on here as I'm getting another snake and at the mo its a toss up between a house snake or a royal. Looking at the names on here theres a few that will know this. Thought it would be useful to find out about them from people that own them. The snake would be mine but I also have 2 children aged 8 and 10 year old that would also want to handle it at times, although they have their own corn so it wouldn't be too regular. I'll apologise in advance for all the questions.
Is their reputation for non feeding as bad as its made out or blown out of proportion in cases? I feed my corns out of their viv in a tub,is this something you'd do with a royal or due to how shy they are do people generally feed them in their rubs/vivs? Are they a LOT more susceptible to RI's than corns? Whats the chances of them needing food larger than rats when they are older? I'm not bothered about feeding mice or rats but a guinea pig would be an issue as I have them as pets. Would it be ok for the rub/viv to be in the living room as I've read that they are really shy? I've read that 9l RUBs are good for baby royals, what kind of age would one need to be moved into a viv? |

Hi Mort (are you a Terry Pratchett fan by any chance?)
Welcome to the forum!
There has just been a thread about a father buying a royal for his 8 year old son, on the general posts section - that may answer a lot of your questions.
But I'll add a bit of info (can't resist!)
Don't know about RIs - hope I never have to deal with them, but have never heard of royals being more susceptible than corns.
Feeding - rats are best.
The non-feeding thing is because in the winter months their minds are on CENSORED - naughty things. They gorge for the rest of the year and then fast while they are thinking about .... It's what royals do, and nothing to worry about. Having said that, you may get the odd hatchling that won't eat and has to be assisted - a good argument for buying your royal from a knowledgeable breeder or shop who will help you over any early difficulties. But this is comparatively rare.
They are shy snakes, but gentle handling, from humans of whatever age, is tolerated and, it seems, even enjoyed. You do have to be sensitive towards their retiring personalities ... bless!
Probably missed out something here but others will add to it lol.
They really are lovely snakes - I am biased, I've got three and hope to breed next winter, but do hope you get your royal. All the best. |

Hi and welcome
Is their reputation for non feeding as bad as its made out or blown out of proportion in cases? Is not really a non feeding issue they just go off the food from time to time they seem to cope very well, cant say the same about the owners though.
I feed my corns out of their viv in a tub,is this something you'd do with a royal or due to how shy they are do people generally feed them in their rubs/vivs? Again is down to personal preference i feed 2 of mine in rubs and one in viv
Are they a LOT more susceptible to RI's than corns? As far as I know they are not any more susceptible to an RI than corns, its all down to proper keeping,
Whats the chances of them needing food larger than rats when they are older? I'm not bothered about feeding mice or rats but a guinea pig would be an issue as I have them as pets. They wont outgrow rats,
Would it be ok for the rub/viv to be in the living room as I've read that they are really shy? They are a shy retiring kind of snake yes, they do like their privacy, however all of mine are kept in the living room quite happily.
I've read that 9l RUBs are good for baby royals, what kind of age would one need to be moved into a viv? is not age dependant is more of a size issue, so will vary from snake to snake when it requires upgrading accomodation |

Thanks for the advice. Its put my mind at ease over a few things. I've been doing a fair bit of reading but sometimes its good to just hear the info straight from people that have personal experience. I picked up a 9l RUB the other day so I'd most likely use one of them to begin with and eventually house it in a 3 foot viv.
I checked out the thread with the father buying his son a royal. Very useful.
Heh,heh I do like the Terry Pratchett books but its mort for Morticia. Used to have very long black hair and I really pale so everyone called me it lol |

Hi Mort welcome to the forum, I've never had a house snake so all I can say is go with the royal. And as far as the feeding thing goes as G told me, it's more of a problem for us than it is for them. |

Hi : )
I agree with what's been said too, but would like to add that I have pet rats! I suppose I don't see my pets rats as the same thing to the frozen ones I'll have soon, maybe 'cause I've never had a conection to them. I know this would be hard for some people to understand though. But he/she won't get as big as to need anything bigger than an adult rat, so your fine : )
I've never had the experience of having a non-eating snake, but my boy is still just over seven months so maybe he's not old enough for dirty thoughts just yet ; ) But as people have said there's really no need to worry about it unless you ever notice that your he/she is starting to loose weight. Snakes can go an incredibly long time without food with no ill effect.
I have, however, been through an R.I. People here will tell you that I was having a right fit over it, it's the main reason I joined here. I still don't know why he got ill (his temp and humidity readings were fine, he was still eating and drinking etc), but I can tell you that after I was advised on how to treat him he's now fine and happy again. But from what I understand it's not really all that common... I could be wrong though so don't take it as gosple.
I have my boy in the living room and he doesn't seem to care. He seems to like being handled and enjoys the new suroundings. Royals are shy, but also curious by nature.
I feed in his viv, never take him out. But a lot of people do like to take their snake out of the viv/RUB just to avoid them swallowing any substrate (I swear his food never touches the ground, it's gone way before that!). I suppose once your Royal gets used to the idea feeding outside of the viv/RUB wouldn't be too much of a problem.
And wecome to the forum : ) I'm sure you'll learn all about what you need to know, I've learnt lots since joining and everyone is very friendly... and patient. |

Well, housies are nice - if I had more money and space ...(as I keep on saying lol)
How do you mean permission? Permission from who?
I'm sure the royal python gods would say YES!
But in the meantime, congrats on the impending housie! |

Ah - I see - yes, snakes and rented accommodation ... that's the reason why I got Saada and Surahi as both their owners were moving. (Can't see why snakes are such a big deal - they're quiet, don't damage furnishings etc. But that's another debate lol.) But your landlords sound pretty understanding - hope you get your royal eventually. |

Well its a general pets and rented accomodation thing. My dad and aunt have never said no to me having any pets but I ask out of respect and I think thats why I've been able to have so many animals over the years. Theres been a change of plan now though. I'm still getting a housie but I'm also going to have a royal instead of another corn. Falcor more than makes up for another corn,I adore him so much.

Hi, yes, welcome again and congrats on the expanded collection ...lol, you're not alone - what is it with snakes? A while back I too said, no more snakes (money and space limited.) And what did I do? Got more snakes ...what the hell, who needs new clothes etc - hate shopping and hairdressers anyway.
Heavily into snakes ...and grunge ...and sod the sofa, it's taking up good viv space. |

Sounds like you've got things just as they should be! |

Bit of a denial post, I do now remember you considering a Royal, nobody can say you rushed your decision. |
