I have just been given my first Royal Python by other half, whom I'm sure some of you might know as Ajokocha. I was very interested when both him and my brother purchased Royal Pythons and was equally excited when my other half ended up buying my brother's Royal Python, which was being kept in my bedroom. So up until about a week ago, I was thinking of getting a Royal Python myself until my partner decided that I could look after the one in my bedroom. With much persuasion, it has changed from me 'just' looking after thee little beauty to me having full ownership.
I'm not a complete novice with handling snakes as I have had some experience of handling Ajokocha's Snow Corn and obviously his now one and only Royal Python. LOL.
I will be putting up some photos of my Royal Python who is in fact a male and named Osiris. He has just recently shed too so he looks lovely. However, thee reason I am joining thee forum is because my other half couldn't recommend you guys enough on how much knowledge you all know. And thee problem I've got is although Osiris had shed lovely, he still has some skin left on his tail end, which I've naturally worried about as new Royal Python owner. And although my other half has told me what to do, I just want to hear any other suggestions that will help my beauty. Before this recent shed though, on the shedding before this, he was left again with a little bit of skin left on his tail end and now with his most recent shed, thee skin is further up his tail now and I'm wondering whether he'll be susceptible to this from now on, or is it just because of him having a bit of skin left on his tail on thee shed prior to thee one recently?
Sorry for thee essay but I'm just excited to finally have a Royal and I don't want him becoming ill or gaining an infection... ): |

Hey, and welcome!
Tail end retaining - it happens quite a lot. It'll either go dry and crusty and come off naturally as he moves around, or you can assist in various ways. One that works quite well is to get an flannel nice and warm under the tap and wring it out so its just damp, and just hold his tail for a couple of minutes or so to soften the old skin, and very very gently rub it off once it has softened. Don't try to persuade it off if it being stubborn, as you can damage the skin underneath, but a couple of attempts at holding it with the warm flannel should soften it right up.
Enjoy! :) |

Hi and welcome!
Yes, the tail end retaining's a pain; Spooky, my ghost corn, always keeps the very end on after a shed - you need a magnifying glass to see it! I just get her water bowl out with her and dip her tail and rub gently with my fingers to manipulate it off; she's quite used to it by now. But royal shed is a lot tougher - as Sevens has said, a bathe with a flannel and gentle massage is good.
All the best with Osiris - cool name. |

I've tried thee flannel idea, with me doing it three times and I've also tried thee pillowcase idea and some of thee skin has come off but there is still a bit left on him. I've decided to leave it for today as I don't want to stress him out and he does need feeding too as he missed his feed last week as his eyes were cloudy. Any more suggestions?
My other half has suggested giving him a bath a couple of days after feeding him to see if it'll work that way but I have no idea what to do and if I go with this idea, how long after I've fed him and what temperature should thee bath be?
I'd like to try your idea BATS but will anymore attempts just stress him out? |

Bathing can be very stressful for them - you need to make sure they are comfatable just being handled for 10-15 minutes without constantly trying to hide before bathing. If he is the exploring type then give him a shot - the water wants to be 31 degrees, but take him out once it gets down to 28 degree - or after 10 minutes, which ever comes first. If you're going to bath him in your bathroom bath, I reccomend making some sort of island in the bath which he can climb onto is he really doesnt like the water. |

Well, when I first started handling him he was a bit skittish but now, he's handling really well and even to thee point where he'll explore a little bit but at thee minute, thee slightish movement will scare him and make him retreat back. Maybe I could use one of his hides as an island? They would be ideal I think.
How deep should thee water be as well? |

Hi, sounds like you might have to do this by degrees, as you say. The tail dipping works well with a corn just after shed (I'm always ready for her these days) but it might not be so simple with a royal, unfortunately - corn shed is much thinner.
Maybe a bath might be a better idea but as Sevens says it can be stressful - if I ever bath a snake, I use a smaller container such as a rub, where the snake feels more secure.
All the best with him - you'll get there. |

I've heard of Shed Ease and I'm swaying towards getting it and some sphagnum moss as well. I think I might only bath him as a last resort, but I'll definitely use a rub if I do. I never thought I'd worry so much about a snake. LOL.
Thank you all once again for your advice. Hopefully it'll come off soon. I'll make sure you all know. LOL. |
