After a none too happy first 24hrs ( temps not right) I've been back to the store where I bought Yoda. They have sold me a new heat matt and I have now put it inside the viv, covered with a cage matt. The temp is now 24 degrees inside the hot hide. I think I now need to go for a new viv with heat lamp! What is the best idea? Are the glass Exo-Terra ones ok if I set it up right or am I better going for wood with a guarded and stat'd ceramic heater? |

| Most people will say wood all the way, glass doesn't hold heat as well apparently, never used a glass myself so cannot vouch for it |

A heat mat is okay for young royals - as they get older and heavier even a statted heat mat can cause burns owing to thermal blocking and the snake's inability, unlike a mammal, to sense heat via its body (its main heat sensing apparatus is the 'pits' below its nostrils (to sense the body heat of prey.)
A viv is definitely best as royals are secretive crepuscular snakes. Infra-red or ceramic bulbs, statted and guarded, are fine.

Oops, amendment, I'm talking about a mat in a viv where the royal comes into direct contact; even if the mat is covered, thermal blocking can still occur with a stat, because of the volume of an adult royal's body. (Slim bodied snakes are okay.)
If a mat is under a rub or tank with an airspace between the enclosure base and the mat, then of course a statted mat is fine. |

I use glass vivs (easier to clean than wood)... but, I live in Florida where it is 78 degrees in my house except for in December and January...
If my house did not have that stable temperature, it will be difficult to maintain the proper temps in the glass viv.
If you're thinking of using the Exo-Terra glass viv with the cabinet-style opening infront and the screen top, I don't recommend this. My royal was able to pop up the screen top on this thing (the lock is on the door, not the screen which is kinda silly really). I now use the 30L tank with the sliding screen lid (I think it's by Zilla, although I can't be sure). Haven't had an escape on that yet! |
