Welcome to the forum.

I have my baby royal in a rub with a heatmat underneath and I am using a mat stat.

You would need another thermostat anyway for your royal even if you used a heatmat as Royals require a higher warm end temp than Corns.

Hi Stumpy and welcome to the forum.

In a viv, the heatmat goes directly into the viv, and needs to be statted of course. The mat mustn't be put underneath a viv or it can overheat, even when statted. For the same reason, a royal, unlike slender corns, gets to be too fat round the middle for a heatmat in a viv to be safe. Reptile heatmats, even when statted, can overheat if a bulky snake lies on them. The snake won't sense the danger or even feel pain until badly burned, as its main heat sense is in the pits below its nostrils that are like radar for sensing the body heat of prey. A statted mat is fine underneath a rub as the airspace between it and the rub prevents this overheating.

In a viv your royal needs infra red or lightless ceramic bulb heating (guarded and statted.) - amendment - IR are run with dimmer, ceramic usually with pulse stats, but there is a good sticky on general keeping section re stats.

Don't know about strips on the wall - perhaps someone else can advise on this?

All the best.

Hello,
Agree with bats, best to go with ceramic with a pulse stat or temp stat. or IR with dimmer stat. I use habistat and one of each, both are reliable.
Good luck.
