I actually had to take a cabinet out of my office to make room for my royal and that was the magic key. My wife had had her eye on the afore mentioned piece of furniture to put in our boys room. To have bought another cabinet would have meant a trip to IKEA (always a nightmare), but with the old cabinet conveniently available I managed to persuade her into accepting my very reasonable offer. We emptied the books out and carried it upstairs, where she spent a happy morning re-arranging the boys bedroom. This snake was meant to be here. I don't know if you can try anything along this line, Laws? |

Brilliant stuff. You'll fall for him even more when you get him home, they have huge personalities. |

I've seen that video too, grabs him my the knuckle, he switches it off to get it off him, my guess is he wasn't going to be nice about it, it held on and even constricts, its a confused snake and thats a feeding response. Its really rare to get bitten, Duke bluffed me the other day but it was his decsion to not tag me. I have heard that pouring listerine onto the area been bitten makes them release quickly and should it happen I'll give it a try.
Your setup sounds good, it might be a bit big but you can always see how he reacts to the space and section a bit off if required. |

its a large flat exo terra faun , and it comes with a little section thing so we can make it abit smaller . ppl have said fauns arent good as they loose heat , but hes going into a viv so it shouldnt make too much of a difference . we are gona get loads of bits and pieces to pack the faun out too , the guy is gona give us the coconut hide he already has so he will be used to it . so excited ! also on firday , the rep shop who has kyle has offered us another snake due to his issues feeding , so we will be gettin zac plus another corn . we have got a larger mat now thats perfect for the two fauns x |

With the faun you will most likely need to have the viv ceramic heater runnning just at ambient temp (24-26oC) and then the heat mat going to full hot end temp (32oC). Fauns are useless at holding heat in the same way a sieve is at holding water but if the faun is in a viv the viv can hold the ambient temp for you.
If it was me it would be royal in the faun in the viv and the corns on top. |

Congrats!
I've only ever once been bitten by a royal and that was Shahi when he was a baby. My own fault for putting his mouse nearer to him with fingers instead of tongs - since my hand was warmer than the mouse he struck instinctively at the heat source - and let go immediately. It was like velcro, it tickled.
There aren't many bitey royals about. Usually it is a feeding response if it happens - they say taking the snake to the sink and running a bit of cold water over its nose will loosen a snake that grips on - also, if the snake is wrapped round your hand, keep your hand as still as possible because in the snake's mind, it's prey, and any movement from your hand will provoke further constrictions to 'kill' it. Shahi once constricted round my hand while feeding and I had to keep still until he ate ... wished I'd brought a book lol.
By the way, don't buy expensive rep feeding tongs - you can get kitchen tongs from Wilkinsons for a couple of quid. I like the ones with plastic grips, softer than metal if the snake misses.
Sorry this is such an epistle (as usual) and sorry to hear about Kyle.
Happy snakeday in advance! |

If I was you to get the best of what you've got I would have your corn snakes in fauns, using 1 heat mat for the pair of them and one mat-stat. Then the Royal straight in the viv, partitioned off to about 1.5-2 feet wide. using either a ceramic heat bulb or Infra Red bulb (a special type of red bulb) with a guard and dimming thermostat and no heat mat. |

yup the corns are ontop with one heatmat and one mat stat . the bulb we have is a 60 w red night spot lamp connected to a habistat dimmer stat . the viv is 2 and a half foot 30 x 18 x 15 ? how would we section it off ? so is it better to not keep him inside a faun placed midway in the viv ? or more towards the cooler end ? the cool end reaches about 27 when the hot end is about 32 x |

You'd find it easier to just deal with heating the viv it becomes more complex (but not impossible) if there is a faun inside that your regulating. That heat gradient you have in the viv is perfect, almost exactly the same as mine. How big is the royal, it may not need sectioning. |

hes 9 months , june cb 10 , alot of ppl on RFUK mentioned that they put theirs same age as him straight into the viv , just to pack it with plenty of hides , we are setting it up tomorro so i will post pics . i think it would be a nitemare trying to control the temp in a faun too as the light is working too hard to up the temp in the faun and then not creating a propper gradient , where as when we have tested the gradient of the viv it is perfect . how hot sould we set the light to be in the hot end? i am going to buy a ceremaic bulb holder as the one we have is plastic and i feel its getting too hot! omg i cant tell u how excited i am ! |

Hi, Slimth, depends on where you live, about prices, and also age of snake, and whether from a shop or breeder. Breeders tend to be cheaper, and normal royals are the lowest priced. The usual rule of thumb for a normal adult is £10 per 100g - so a snake weighing a kilo would be worth £100. Morphs are more expensive (although Tawfik, in Syria, found normals and pastels priced equally.)
Personally, I'd say, if you've fallen in love with the snake, especially if it's healthy and feeding well, the price doesn't really matter. Even if it's expensive, well, it's a very dear snake lol!
Hey, Laws, not long to go now - bet you're dead excited! |

I agree nobody wants ripped off but if you think its worth £100 then all good, I spent that on a normal and worth every penny, I'd have paid double that, he's such a character. |
