Hi, iv been thinking about getting a royal for a while now but i cant decide between a royal or a king snake. Im already signed up on the king snake forum and thought id sign up here aswell. The only thing that is discouraging me from getting a royal is that they are such problem feeders.
Just thought id drop in and say hi and im looking forward to having a nosy round this forum. |

Hi Emma, royals are not too bad. I have 3 that feed every week without fail, they eat out of the viv in a rub, no matter what the light conditions are, and 1 lazy adult male who still has his mind on other things apart from food :)

Thanks for the replys :) Yeah i know they're not all bad eaters but it still worries me a bit. Iv handled them quite a lot because im studying Animal Management at college and im around them and other reptiles alot and i really like them,so even if i dont get one for my first snake i'll probrably get one for my second snake anyway :) |

Hi and welcome to the forum.
At any point between autumn/spring, a royal may fast for weeks or months, because it's the breeding season and their minds are on higher (or lower) things! I look on it as a kind of hibernation. I've just had my first winter with 3 royals, a cf10, a cf09 and a cb06, and they all fasted and they're all eating again now (fingers crossed!)
It isn't that they're poor eaters - they just don't eat all the year round!
(Well, sometimes you can find a hatchling whose settling-in disrupts its eating; they're shy guys, as you'll know, but that is another story. Even so, once re-started, they'll usually be grand eaters ...until the winter fast of course.) |

Captive farmed, I think it means the parents were taken from the wild, or the eggs were taken from the wild. God knows i've never seen a cf snake hehe |

Yeah, roughly what Kelf says, although I reckon a snake bred in captivity from wild-caught parent/s would be categorised as cb.
Usually a captive farmed royal is hatched from eggs 'harvested' from wild royal python burrows in Ghana, Togo and Benin in West Africa. The hatchlings are then exported to the UK, US and other countries to supply the pet trade. If this doesn't sound bad enough, apparently there is over-harvesting of eggs just in case a rare morph appears from wild stock.
When I bought Shahi, my first royal, I didn't understand about cf, which is also known as captive 'ranched'. I HAD done some homework, mind, but didn't fully realise his history. As far as I'm concerned, he was here, and I'm very glad I gave him a home - he's a most beautiful snake. Saada, my other cf, came to me via Preloved as her owner was moving into student accommodation, where she wasn't allowed. She too is a little beauty, with a very 'reduced' pattern ie few dark spots in the golden loop shapes on her sides.
CF or cb, royals are great. It is said that the cf royals coming into the UK prevent the gene pool of breeding snakes from stagnating, and a percentage of cf royals are released back into the wild to keep up population levels (for further depredations? ) but I'm afraid there are less savoury tales of this trade. But Shahi was here and he needed a home - I don't regret buying him. Though I'm not sure if I'd support or condone the cf trade in future ...
Just glad, though, that I have Shahi and Saada. |

Ah I knew it was something along those lines.
Cf and wc snakes will always be frowned upon, my big male is wc (wild caught). I've always gone on with the whole ''if it's already been captured or farmed before I got involved then all i'm doing is giving a snake a good home'. But at the same time I guess if nobody bought cf or wc then people would stop taking them. Suppose it depends if you look at the big picture or the small picture, or if you care about the issue at all. All I know is my male is grreat and I wouldn't trade him :D |

Hmm, that is how these toerags get us - because I for one wouldn't refuse a home to an imported animal in need if I could give it the proper space and attention ... |

Yeah i don't agree with taking animals from the wild but i see your point Kelfezond, if they have already been taken from the wild and are in a shop then someones going to buy it eventually anyway, so i wouldnt really be against giving one a home either. |

It's an industry, I'm afraid. If you can possibly get hold of a copy of Kevin McCurley's 'Complete Ball Python', that explains it far better than I can in a short post. And it's a bit like the gold rush - if a guy can hatch a different morph he can make a lot of dough ... I believe there's a lot of stuff on google. But it's not a good scene. |

Hehe i hope it doesn't I'v been researching different snakes for a while now and they are all so pretty i want them all! My parents have other ideas though it took me long enough to convince them to let me have this snake. The plan is to have my first snake for a few months and let my parents get used to having it around and then start working on letting me have another |
