Our male has refused his last 2 meals but we wont worry yet, it is quite normal especially at this time of year and as long as he doesnt lose weight its not a problem, we'll allow him to miss 4 feeds but then I plan to try exposing the brain of the rat pup, a bit gross but apparently quite effective.
Another important thing to remember if your snake is refusing feeds is to make sure the food item is warm enough to register on the snakes heat sensors, we dip ours in hot water for a short time then feel the rat pup and if it doesnt feel warm like a live mammal its still too cold. They also give off more smell when theyre warm.
On the plus side we'll never end up 'binning' unwanted food items, we have an ornate monitor, he'd eat the arse out of a dead warthog. |

| I am officially declaring myself out of the non feeding club, Duke has taken every meal offered in January including the one only 4 days after the previous meal because I forgot when I fed him even though I write everything down in a book. |

well its its drogos time to join the club,hes refused 2 feeds now the first was on 1/2/2012 and tonight aswell.
before that hes last sucsessful feed was 23/1/2012.
hes been acting strange the last few days ie heat bathing alot more on top of his hide but most mornings he will end up in his colod hide and wont move from there allday.
and tonight when i went to feed him he didnt seam to want to stay in the rub he was very intent on getting out for a wander so he had a sliver around for a bit but was the same when put back in to the rub,was he serching for a mate?
i tryed the car ride trick and heating the rat in hot water but no luck

So you think he's looking for a mate then?
I weighed him over the weekend at 655g , 2ft 24" long aprox 1.4 years old
If he fasts how much weight cud he lose? I ur opinion

It's impossible to predict weight loss - some royals fast for months and scarcely lose weight at all - I think of it as a kind of hibernation.
My records for winter 2010/11 show Shahi and Surahi's weight scarcely varying; Saada lost a little, but they all piled it on in the spring and summer months (Shiva didn't join me until last November.)
But I don't think you need to worry too much about weight loss. Just keep on offering food every 10 days (I offer a slightly smaller prey item - for some reason this can sometimes tempt them) and don't worry if it's not taken. Sometimes a fasting royal will take a snack though!
Conversely he might just decide to start eating again ...they are unpredictable little gits lol.
Good luck with his first fast - it will be spring before you know it. |

5 weeks and counting for Chancho, naughty boy has ladies on his mind i guess!
The other night he decided to climb down my jumper instead and ignore Mr Rat completely *facepalm*
He's definitely been less active in these colder months too, so that may be a factor. think he just likes to stay toasty in his warm hide, he doesn't knock around his rub half as much as usual... teenagers ey?! |

well you never know, he went nuts for his rat tonight, struck for it like a hungry boy then spent half an hour faffing about trying to work out how it goes in his mouth *oh dear*
Just re-warmed the head again and let him strike again (he never eats rats just left overnight, he only eats what he strikes at, meaning sometimes i can get him to strike again and feed successfully), this time he got his big gob round the rat's head so hopefully he'll put two and two together and eat his dinner!! fingers crossed! |

Good luck - Shiva sometimes does this - but then he finally realises it's dinner ...how come snakes are supposed to be so savage and wily in the wild, and in captivity they turn out to be so ...well...thick? Lol!

| I haven't been here for quite a while but I am in need of support and advice. Alice has not eaten anything since last June - yes really! She sheds every now and then and looks ok if a bit on the thin side but her skin is lovely and her eyes are bright. I moved country and can't get the mice she used to eat so have been buying hamsters - she takes one look and goes back to sleep. One pet stall owner suggested chicken sausages - he says all the sellers feed them these. I am worried about the additives. I tried bantam eggs (we have those as well!) but no luck. I am getting really rather worried. Any ideas? |

| I m in with my royal, it hasn't shed since i ve had it and the guys at the shop i got it from didn't have any info on the last feeding... but tried a few times over the past 2 weeks with know success unfortunately :( |

Rockroyal missing a single rat isnt anything to worry about especially at the weight it is at.
Likewise Rockstar a few missed meals when just arrived isnt a worry likely just settling in. once everything has settled in should be fine i weould imagine, |
