Hello and greetings from Finland.
About 3 weeks ago i purchased royal python from a pet store. It's about year old and back in the store it seemed to be okay to be handled as the shop keeper took it out to show it to me.
I knew move is gonna cause it stress so i left it alone for a week or so before trying to do anything with it. Since then i've tried to handle it few times but everytime i bring my hand neardby it starts breathing heavily (not hissing...just normal breathing getting faster and deeper) and generally looks very scared so i've just left it alone. I've stroked it few times without picking it up just to make it used to me but it havent worked so far it seems.
I need some advice. |

put a sock or cloth in you pocket for a few hours then place it in the viv. helps them get used to your scent.
what is your setup like? vivarium,faun, rub? what heating system and temps? |

It's vivarium with sliding doors. On warm side i have heatmat and a lamp. The temp is around 35c. Cool side is 25c. There's hide on either side and the snakey seems to be changing sides quite often. |

Hi, and welcome to the forum.
Is this breathing noise a sort of 'haaaaaah!' sound? That is just an alarmed royal who is still settling in. They are very shy.
If the breathing is quiet at all other times, the snake sounds fine.
You don't need to worry about handling until after 3 meals - but, at the moment, this is the royal mating season, when they usually fast. Did the shop advise about feeding?
The royal may not feed at the moment but this is normal and nothing to worry about - just let her/him settle and keep offering food every 10 days, and she/he will eventually feed and make friends with you. 3 of my own royals are fasting and very shy at the moment and don't want to be handled,even though they've been with me quite some time.

| Ah it already ate a week after i brought it home so atleast it has eaten once for me already. Haha. |

| Oh that's good, shows the little guy's settling in. Yeah, one of mine's still eating. Another two feeds for your guy and then time to think about handling. |

You will find they breathe more heavily when you first pick them up, its part been scared but its also part increase in oxygen requirements, when sitting at rest they are using very little energy their heart and breathing slows, the heavy breathing in part is them switching on to full power.
As above if its feeding that is a very good sign that it is settling down nicely. Allow three feeds before any prolonged handling sessions to be sure he is nicely settled in and comfortable with you. |
