Hi just got Kane out of his viv and could tell he seemed a little funny, not sure if its hunger or just him being a bit stroppy so just sat holding him waiting for him to settle down and he seemed like he had, he was moving around the bed and having a little explore but then out of nowhere he's tried having my hand so he's back in his viv now... It just got me thinking how many people have been tagged while their snakes are just out and about seeing as most people have told me 99% of bites happen while trying to get them out. |

I've been tagged a fair few times while handling my royals, normally if they've been out longer than they like. |

It came out of nowhere, i was just a second quicker than him this time :) were they just quick nips or proper bites? |

Hi, I've never seen this myself with any of my royals (although there's always a first time lol.) But it can happen. I can't recall offhand when Kane last shed, so my first thought would be pre-shed irritability, followed by feeding response behaviour. Or simply not wanting to come out of his viv - they can get quite bolshy lol.
Probably just a one-off, as their natures aren't always predictable, but, also, was there anything different about the room, or you? Such as a new noise, or a smell of cooking (I've heard of royals going crazy over the smell of roast or fried chicken) or you wearing a new after shave or soap, or even having touched another animal. Snakes can be very sensitive to smells or vibrations, as you know.
Hope he behaves himself in future for you. |

I cant think of anything different in the room or about me and he shed about a month ago, Im not bothered about him striking at me just got me to thinking about other people getting bit out of the viv, to be honest it's probably hunger, he fed 4 days ago but it was only a small mouse that didn't even leave a bulge in him, gonna get a weaner rat tomorrow cause the pet shop didn't have any yesterday... I've said on here before that he can be a stroppy bugger as it is lol but I gotta love him |

Lol - yeah, makes life interesting and you do find yourself loving them, bless them. Got a soft spot for the feisty ones myself.
She's not a royal, of course, but a while back I'd got Missy out for a gallop round, she's a greedy one; the minute you open her viv she's there - 'what you got for me?' So now she was zooming about - and all of a sudden she put her head over her shoulder and gave me a little nip. It was so cute and cheeky that I'm afraid I fell about laughing. I did buy her with an 'attitude problem' but although when she first came she struck and thrashed about and tail rattled, she never bit me up until then.
That's what I like about them - their unpredictability. |

I love their unpredictability but also dislike it, I've always had a thing for misfit animals or The oddballs and the troublemakers... He was out last night for about 45 mins and was fine and he was really explorative and I was sat in the bathroom with him while Tasha was having a bath and slithered off Tasha into the water and was fine with all that...
Been meaning to put a message on the other reptile bit about Tashas butter corn, she doesn't strike for her food, she just slithers up to it and opens her mouth and gently takes the food from the tongs so I was wondering if anyone else's corns do this? |

Ohh yes, same here! A problem child or, like my Cy with one eye, not likely to be sold, or just simply an animal in need of a home, I always want to take them - I daren't go on preloved very often!
Sounds like Kane's doing fine and settling well.
Yes, your butter corn is fine. Plenty of them feed like that, including my own butter. However they sometimes change tactics for no reason - a strike feeder will start wanting the mouse left in with them, a 'lie down' feeder will suddenly become a striker.
Umm, back to unpredictability again lol. |

I always wanna take in animals but sadly cant due to having to move back into my mums... I picked my staff cause i knew he'd be trouble and he is worth all the times ive had to fork out money to replace things he's broken or take him to the vets, that and the fact i fell in love with him when he was only an hour old, he's my pride and joy
Yeah he seems really settled :) ill post some pics later of him from yesterday.
Ok thanks ill bare that in mind |

On the plus side a strike without contact is a warning shot across the bow in the snake world, they dont miss if they mean business. |

They dont miss if they want to get you. Most of the time its a bluff, a show of strength to make you jump and recoil and it has the desired effect most of the time. A lot of snakes wont even bother wasting their energy opening their mouths but will still strike at you, good old head butt lol. |
