Duke still hisses when he comes out at night, not showing signs of RI as no mucas or bubbles, he's doesnt sit up right when he comes out. was told they can his if they dont like the environment? he climbs about a lot so its probably true he isnt happy, even though i changed his viv to a smaller one.
any advice?

Its hard to say Adam, what's his temps at?
32c hot and around 27c cold is ideal.
Have you got a hide at either end?
What heating are you using?

If you can reply with as much information as possible, it might hilight the reason.

temps fluctuate between about 31.5 and 32.5 using a night glo heat bulb and cool end isn't measured all the time, clocked it at 28 though and only got one hide at the moment which might be a bit big for him bless him.. rest of his viv includes a water bowl and fake plants. He's a very shy snake and has had a pop at me a few times, trying to handle him about 3 times a week, when he does he doesnt hiss, no heavy breathing, he just balls up

The temps are fine, how long have you had him?
Sorry, I expect you have posted his age etc. elsewhere, but if you could post that and his age here it'll help. I know, i'm being lazy lol

You didn't mention feeding problems, so i'll assume he's eating :)

It sounds like his enclosure may be a little large for him, could you give the measurements?
I kept my Royal and Boa is faunariums until they had settled, and outgrew the fauns.
His behavior suggests anxiety and the first thing to rule out his surroundings. They do relish tight spaces, or at least many Royals seem to.

Without seeing him myself, my guess is that he needs to be placed in a rub..I think he's stressed as he isn't ready for a viv just yet.
A large sandwich tub with air holes punched would do until you can get a faun.
You'd need a heat mat and mat stat, at least one small hide..maybe a kitchen roll tube wouold be large enough. Or a margarine carton washed out, with a door way cut out.

I think that would work, but you'd have to leave the lid off the rub so he can regulate his temperature. Otherwise he'd be unable to reach a cool hide

Its been nagging at me since I replied, I'd like a second opinion on this but I believe you'll still need a statted heat mat. You couldn't put a plasic run beneath a heat bulb as it would overheat. I'll post a thread linking thread, so worry not Adam, we will sort your problem and make Duke a contented lad :)

OK Adam, a couple of tips that Rob gave me to help.

Firstly as Duke is eating, its unlikely that he's stressed as they usually refuse to eat.
Place a sock in his viv, that will get him used to your scent, also try handling every day cept the 48hrs after feeding.
Try a small hide at both ends, that will boost his confidence. If that doesn't help after a week we'll try something else :)

Janie seems to have covered everything. Just to reiterate a couple of points, a couple of hides at least should be provided to allow the snake to thermoregulate (move between warm and cold areas) safely. I used to use upturned Ice Cream containers with a door cur out when I didn't have a spare hide (just make sure you don't leave any sharp edges).

If you can't reduce the viv size by means of some sort of partition, then fill the viv as much as possible, multiple hides/bark/plants etc. and just accept that you may not see the snake as much as you did before.

As has also been mentioned, if its eating, well you must be doing something right so don't worry too much ;)

thanks a lot everyone, yeah he just ate last night, like i said he was a problem feeder before feeding on large mice, i've got him on small rat weaners now, he wont take it unless im out of the room, the first time he struck and constricted and same with the second but since then if he sees me he doesnt come out. i've tried the sock thing, but i'll put a new one in soon and go cut a new hide.

just some extra information, no idea if its important, he's had mites and im currently treating him for the second time. I've also noticed a mark on his right eye, not a retained cap but it might be hard for him to see properly.. just waiting for his next shed to see if it comes off

Ah, he probably knows that most times he's handled it gets the dreaded 'treatment' lol
As he's eating, the mites and his eye, I think he'll settle down nicely :)

i'll add to my reply, I suggest to continue as you are, then after the mites are cleared up, and treatment is finished then see how he is after a week of daily handling sessions. Until then I doubt his mood will improve.

My new snake amber is hissing at me a little so I decided to pack her RUB up with some more leaves. I don't know if she is more comfortable yet though.
