Well it was Loki's first feed attempt last night and it didn't go to well .
Defrosted the rat pup at room temp in the day and warmed with a hairdryer. He did take interest in the scent but refused to take and spent his time going the other way.
I left the pup in over night, but checking this morning looks like he totally avoided it.
Should I make another feed attempt on Friday or leave it longer before trying to feed again?
Any other tips guys?

Found out some additional information. He was last fed on 18/10/2012 with a warm rat pup. So with the stress of moving I think I have tried to early or he might not be hungry yet.
So I will try again next week (monday/tuesday) and see what happens, also I will leave him completely alone accept for spot checks and water changes. |

I always attempt a feed on the night of any new arrival and if they have been kept quiet and not handled almost always they do feed, you could try one more time tonight and if he still doesn't show any interest leave him well alone and try again in 5 days, leaving the rat pup in overnight is fine but remove it the next morning if it has not been taken, some will feed when all is quiet. As always with royals as the can be quite pernickety when it comes to feeding patience is a virtue. :) |

Stab the rat through its skull(braining) can sometimes work as they get the scent from its brain |

Patience is gonna be a virtue with this little guy I feel.
Just wish he put as much effort in eating as surfing the edges of the rub |

Lol they all have their moments my first royal decided he'd miss 4 weeks for some reason and just fed again last week its just a case of learning not to worry too much about them and buying another breed of snake that eats anything to give the unwanted rats lol |

I was just like you with mine. Stop worrying. You'll look back in a few weeks and wonder what the problem was, I did.
Just leave him well alone possibly cover the sided of the viv/rub with a towel and leave 5/7 days between try's. I had no interest at all, scared of the mouse. Then once I had some interest, she struck, scared herself and flew in her hide and didn't move all night. Week later she fed properly, striking and constricting. Since then she's not missed a feed. |

Might give it a try Carl and cover up his rub and leave for another 5 days (apart from water changes and spot checking)

I wouldnt stress about it. We've all either got one or had a snake that hasn't eaten for a long time. |

Tried tonight again still nothing, shows a bit of interest then flees.
Might try the mouse trick. What time frame is worry time? he has not fed for about 2 1/2 weeks. Not fed with us yet, last took on the 18/10 at the shop |

Stick to rats, if thats what he is used to I wouldn't chance it with mice as they can on occasion become picky enough to only eat mice and thats fine when they are little but a Royal pain in the ass when they are bigger as you would need to feed them about three adult mice instead of just one rat to meet their dietary needs.
Royals are well known for been a little bit stressy, particularly around moving homes, it may be your snake is just a little bit of the shy variety of Royal. If your setup is as it should be (temps, hides etc) then patience is about all you need. It took me 3 weeks to get my Royal to feed after bringing him home and he has a very specific way to feed him, get it wrong and you've no chance. I shall share it, it might work or your one may just need a bit more time to settle in.
I have to feed at night, just before bed, I defrost the rat all day on top of the vivarium, just before bed I have to first check to make sure he is not out of his hide, (if he is then I have to wait) then I have to sneak the rat into the back of the vivarium close to the hide he is in (not under the bulb, trust me you dont want to wake up to the smell of ro-ast-dent) and then I go to bed. In the morning I check to make sure its gone and when he isn't fasting the rat is usually gone.
Another thing I found was that Duke doesn't like light, not at all so I have no lights in Duke's vivarium at all, I use ceramic bulbs for heating. When I first got him I had a red bulb, he wasn't eating so I switched to an infra red bulb and it definitely was an improvement but it wasn't until I switched to ceramics that he became a lot more active and more chilled out generally. |

Will deffo keep trying with rats, I know last time he was fed on a fuzzie and I only have pups (would this make a difference?)
Its killing us not seeing him as he is so friendly and pushes his way out towards us when water changing. Just need the little bugger to feed. Coming upto week 3 on 08/11/2012 without a feed.
Another attempt tomorrow, fingers crossed |
