well done you on getting him sorted so far..
thats the thing anne don't really have any details on him as regards age... so going by the size of his teeth, how pronouced his beely scare still is and general size Ii would have thought he is around 13-18 weeks. so still a baby.
I had him out this morning for a quick look over. I had applied his second frontline treatment on friday. no sign of any mites at the minute on him or in rub so hopefully we have nipped that in the bud.
Just need to get him feeding now. Put him on scales this morning and weigh 69g. so is holding on and gaining weight from when i first got him. Disappointed that he couldn't take the rat pup. Any way as i had him out i thought i'd get some food it him so i weighed out 6g worth of pinkie mice and went for assisted with those. first one he took no problems, 2nd was a bit slower and last on he help in his mouth for a few minutes before swallowing. it was while he had the third in his mouth that the crackling noise started again. but once food was gone he was quite again.
Had issues with my stat the last few days were sometimes it was switching on but not sending power to the heat mat. so went out and bought a habi-stat mat stat today which is running away now.
I will buy some fuzzy mice tomorrow and get him back to them in a few days as at least he took them before and one of those would be better than 3pinkies.
think thats all for now. no poo yet is the only thing but thats not a concern at the minute. |

Dahomey is feeding thats the main thing, does not matter that it is assist for now, a good month on good food and the difference will be there..
Peanut still crackles sometimes, but normally when coming into shed..
As does Bliss if you hold her for to long, but i think with her it is cos she does not like to much handling...
keep posting updates, i am enjoying reading how things are going |

cheers anne. yeah pretty happy now that i got those pinkies in him. he is in really good form and is still strong for all the size/weight of him so thats a good sign. the two of us have developed a great bond. he loves being out with me and will sit quite happily wrapped around my hand and is very trusting. if i sit him down on the surface he comes looking for my hand and just rests his head on it. very cute really. and just what i needed today. As we have a very sad house this weekend as we brought willow (our lab) to her new home yesterday. the house just isn't the same. |

I think that you are doing a brilliant job! I agree with Anne that it doesn't matter that he is being assisted in his feeding, but I would also say at this stage just give him whatever he will eat regardless of whether they are fuzzies or pinkies, anything is better than nothing :) |

you know the one thing that melts me is when they do the head on the hand thing...
Peanut is great for it, he will just sit there and it never fails to make Glenn go all silly..
really sad for you about Willow, sending you all a hug, will you be able to go see her? or are you going to leave it? |

Hi all Sorry Anne not a lot to report. Tired him the other day again with a rat pup but he just doesn't want it. he really doesn't seem to want to eat anything. and has difficulty getting anything down. eventually only managed to get one pinkie mouse in to him. as he was getting a wee bit stress. he got a wee bit dehydrated again so have gone back to the syringe and gastric tube to make sure he is getting fluids. have done that twice in the last 3 days and his skin is showing signs of being re-hydrated although i can still see it in his eyes.. Pretty sure the mites have been wiped out so have put proper hides in his rub for him and after a day or two he finally realized that he was meant to lie under them and not on top of them.
Weighed him on Saturday and he is 68g. which i'm not too happy about, bought some fuzzy mice today to see if i can get them into him again as he had a couple before. he is still so tiny even compared to the girls Freyja is getting a big girl now and loving her weaners. Gaia still being funny with food so when she refused a weaner the other day i offered it to freyja who was up at the glass having a good tongue flick, greedy girl took it even though she had only been fed three days previous.
Just hoping that Dahomey will take these fuzzies as he really needs to start putting on the weight and filling out so his skin fits him. Love him to bits, we have become very attached and he loves getting the bottom of his chin stroked like a dog.
As far as the RI worry goes there doesn't appear to be any other symptoms. his breathing is silent when there isn't food in his mouth and there doesn't appear to be any mucus. I think i might try and get freyja to open her mouth for me so i can make a comparison between a healthy mouth/throat and his.
Thats all for now will update again when i try feeding him again. Due to be moving house in less than four weeks now so would love to have him putting on weight before we move. |

Thanks for the update, i was worried about him when you had not posted..lol
it sounds like he is what i call depressed...
that was how Kaz was when i got her, she had no interest in anything..
you know if he takes a mouse you can always at some point jacket a rat pup just to try and get something more in him..
shame your not closer, you could have had some of my multi babies..
keeping everything crossed for you that he pulls through...

cheers to you both and thanks for that offer anne means a lot even if i am this far away the thought and support works well to.
as for the rat pup in mouse jacket. I had thought about that but it really seems to be the size of the item that is causing the problem. i starting to think he may be a captive farmed, which would have explained the mites and general poor condition couls have been caused with transport. just a theory though no way of really proving that.. I will be trying him with the fuzzy mouse tomorrow. so fingers crossed |

Hi all well success with the fuzzy mouse, with assist anyway. so happy about that as it is going to be a lot more use than a pinkie. skin and body seems to be holding hydration how ever still noticeable in left eye. When i offer food first as always just to see what the interest level was there was a bit more excitement and tongue flicking tonight he even nudged the fuzzy but then withdrew.
Now something I noticed last night in freyjas viv which made me do any early total clean out were small little white kind of bugs. now they were not mites as in the sort i have just been getting rid of. How ever i notices them then tonight in the outer viv that Dahomeys rub is housed in. Tried to take a pic put of course that was never going to work with the size of these things. Any thoughts? I know there are some little bug things that like humide conditions that you can find any where and that are not harmful to the snakes, so hoping that this is what they are? |

Good news that Dahomey took a mouse fluff. Gotta be better than a pinkie! Bless him... I really hope he can keep hydrated and keep up the feeding, even if it is still assisted. Little white bugs sound a bit like substrate mites... there are loads of them in my Phelsuma tank. In that sort of environment they just live in the soil and help to break down poop, dead leaves etc. Not sure what sort of impact it would have in a snake viv. They never seem to bother my gecko, but he doesn't live on the ground like a snake does. |

Just had Dahomey out for a quick look over. still clear on the mites. not looking just as dehydrated. and he is urinating ok liquids and solids. still hasn't pooed from i have had him. put him on scales and he weighs 67g. now this is causing me a bit of concern as he has had over 15g of food in the last 2 weeks hasn't pooed but has gained no weight at all. Any thoughts? would internal parasites be a possibility. he also has 2 pink patches on belly. Which you can see is from under the scales from he inside. I had be thinking that this was due to he lack of weight and condition. If I had of got a poo sample i would have brought it to be checked but he has not presented me with that opportunity.
Apart from the above he is of course 100% more healthy than what he was we i took him. And he does have good strength and tail curl.( you know when this just use the very tip of their tale to grip round your finger.)
So plan at the minute now that mites are gone, is to continue monitoring the hydration level using repto-boost in water and using syringe and tube when needs be. try and get some weight on him with the feeding. Keeping him in quarantine for a a few more weeks yet. I'll try and take some new pics next time i have him out. |

Still sounding promising - no idea why he wouldnt gain any weight, but if he is still weeing lots then maybe thats why. As long as he isn't loosing any - then that I think would be a concern. Keep up the good work - I sure it will pay off. |

Another quick update. had dahomey out about 15minutes ago for another feed. Suck him back on scales before hand and he weighed 70g before feeding. so he has managed to put on weight with out eating , could be fluids as he is looking a lot less dehydrated. managed with just as much effort as last time to get a fuzzy into him. poor thing he really does find swallowing difficult. He will have the pry item half way down he throat and then almost spit it out and then try to swallow again. he has be resting his head more on top of his hide almost star gazing, and when he was eating what I had previously assumed to just be saliva is a lot more tacky than before. Also the roof of his mouth looked quite red. I tried to take a few pics so will get them up asap. |

just to let you know the reason i am still holding him while he is eating is to stop him dragging his head along the ground and pulling the food item out. |
