I have just followed, with interest, the whole of your ordeal with your new snake. It is horrific the way that some snakes are kept and that is not just by people who do not know what they are doing, but by some pet shop owners too. I have seen snakes in pet shops that have not been cleaned out for weeks and when handled smell so strongly of urate and faeces, there are mites crawling on them and the water bowls are black with sludge and slime. We rescued our corn snake from such a shop (its a pity that we couldn't have taken them all!). When your snake is fully recovered you will be so proud of your achievements and rightly so. By the way, I love the name too :)

thanks Debbie. and you are right it really is appalling how some shops keep there animals. i know of one that i have spoken to a couple of times who dont even use thermostat. and on some occasions when i have been in they don't even have the heat source turned on.

I think that is a ploy to slow down the metabolism so that they don't have to feed them too much. I saw an earlier message that you added to this thread which said that your snake was making the snuffling noise usually attributed to RI infections. Could it be that there are possibly some mites still in its nostrils? Our corn was snuffling when she had mites but when we treated them the snuffling went too. We used the defender mites that were able to enter the nostrils and seemed to cause no ill effects to her. I hope he is making a speedy recovery

I think the noises were more from just the amount of saliva he is producing to eat. he really does have difficulty with is food. he has it have swallowed then it back out to just head in mouth and he repeats this for a good while until eventually he manages to swallow all.

he seems to be doing well. a lot stronger than he was can't wait to he gets through this shed.I can get a another good look over him and see what way the scaring is looking. but he is definitely drinking from his water bowl so hopefully i won't need to be using the tube again for a while.

At least if he is drinking properly that is one less thing to worry about and a promising sign that he is on the mend.

hi all well update time. as you may be aware Dahomey is in shed mode at the minute had him out tonight for another oily warm bath. i can tell the shed is not going to be good as he is going scale at a time and peeling under throat but still shed on head and eyes. i made up a hide from a litre plastic milk carton .put a sheet of just damp kitchen towel in bottom and then filled it full of strips of newspaper. he is back in rub sitting on new hide so seems to like that.

as for Mites no sign of any but is due second front line treatment on Friday so hopeful we have put an end to them. assited with another other night 4th/10/09. so he has food in him at least. had him on scales tonight and he is at 72g which is what freyja was when i got her back from tony. he still looks very then but i think it looks worse as i am used to seeing gaia and freyja now.

as for vent area still have to get a good pic to post .when i have him out for front line treatment i'll get karen (my wife) to take some with her camera and close up lens. the vent looks very dry and perhaps to exposed. still feel that some one has tried to pop him and damaged him in doing so. you see when i get up pic.

general observations. he does seem alot happier an dis happy being handled and sits comfortably with me. he is a lot more alert than he was 2weeks ago and is moving around a lot quicker and is noticeably stronger.

i am normally quite a pessimist but i am starting to get a good feeling about him. fingers still crossed though.

just out of bath

having a drink.
oh nearly forgot. he urinated yesterday, for the first time from i have had him . and then done a little piddle while i was looking over him tonight.both liquid only. so hopefully a sign that his hydration levels are on the up.

Brilliant news, following this little fella with interest.
Great he is drinking and weeing, and he looks quite bright and shiney in the picture, so hopefully the worst is over for you and it's just a matter of re treating for mites and fattening him up.
Well done for perservering with everything - i know where to come when I need expert advice now ;)

another update. i have spend the best part of the last hour and a bit with Dahomey the two of us thought we would go through this shed together. there was just no way he was going to get it of on his own. it had been coming of scale at a time.

so out came the warm bath rub and in he went for a soak while i took advantage of him being out of rub again and changed it all again. I know i only done it last night but thought it can only help.
after that set up kitchen table ready for a shed session. Cotton buds lots of, cotton pads, kitchen towel, flannel and warm water.

worked way around head but it was not for moving, think the scareing is going to make that difficult...
So getting no where with hit. so moved down to neck where there already was a bit of peeling shed. very slowly and gently always moving from head to tail i stroked the wet cotton bud along the edge of old and new skin. as i said very slowly. eventually i had managed to get all the way to the other side of the body. At this point the skin was not very strong so with no effort at all i broke the shed there separating the head shed from body. I knew head was going to take a lot more work so thought better to get body done and dusted at list he will be able to breathe again.

using the flannel now for the rest of the body. After soaking it in warm water i began to gently stroke towards the tail to peel the shed back. it really was bad it just kept separating, not because it was attached to the skin but just that it wasn't very strong.

well after maybe 15min we had made it half way down the body. At this point the shed started to hold together more and i could let him do some of the work so I just held him in the flannel and let him move through it... he stopped every now and then for a bit of a break while i gave him works of encouragement. Finally got down to a few inches from tip of tail and shed started to come apart again. all i could think was please no, hold together to we at least get a clean shed over the vent and you know what. it did. clear to the tip.

so now we have an almost fully shed Dahomey. Did take any pics sorry. But pleased to see that shed has taken away alot of what i was worried about around the vent area and it is looking a lot healthier.
Going to try and get a Rat pup into him tomorrow to help to start and build him up.

He really has come a long way so far, but still a long way to go.

Awww you're doing such an ace job... if only the previous owner knew how much effort and stress (for the snake and for you) it has been. I hope that things continue to improve and that Dahomey goes from strength to strength. He's drinking on his own, has food in his tummy (despite it being assist fed... he'll get there!), is almost mite-free and doesn't have to worry about a shed for another little while! I'm sure by the next shed he will be so much better and hopefully able to deal with it more easily.
This is the sort of story that makes you feel sad at first, but also uplifted with each hurdle that's cleared. Keep up the good work!

fingers being crossed didn't work no joy with rat pup . just did not want it even with assist he done everything he could to get it out of his mouth. a lot more wheezy noises and a couple of bubbles while pup was in mouth. and sides of mouth do look a bit swollen. No noises when food is not there. even holding him right up to my ear. so not sure what is happening if there is and RI or just it just from all the saliva he is producing when food item is in mouth.??????????????
any thoughts?? Don't suppose any one has a picture of an open mouth when there is and RI present. Or if i try and get one up in the next few days does any one think they could tell? Anne???

these are some pictures of snakes with RI, one is a royal python, maybe two. If thought two of them had mouth rot, but when i was reading on it said this is the result of major thick saliva and mucus. poor things

hope this helps, and hope you royal gets better.

well here he is after a lot of work and patience and a very well behaved snake. total shed free.

had a good listen and couldn't here any noises from him. the shed around is head it think may have been partial retained from last time so nostrils and pits were quite full of old shed which may have been causing noises as his breathing would have been very restricted.
