Today Odin started stargazing, he's been off his food but only for a week (since last tuesday as that's when he wouldn't feed). He sounded a bit crackly, and his skin seemed to be a bit saggy so I thought that perhaps he was dehydrated so whenever I change his water I'll put him it in, and I've seen him drink when I've done that. But I had him out a moment ago and he's badly stargazing, I think it may be IBD =[ I'm really upset about the idea of losing him, he's only a snake but I'm still crying about it.

when you say star gazing, what exactly is he doing? weigh him if you can and what size of food is he on? he may be approaching shed which can put them of their food and explain saggy skin. and dehydrated look. How does he look around around the eyes.? or their any dents in eyes?

Here's a video I did about 20 minutes ago when I got him out, sorry it's so dark but my camera's poo in low light.

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v67/angelic_eyez/Odin/?action=view¤t=002-1.mp4

He's lot a little bit of weight, which I thought might still be related to dehydration, I'm not exactly sure of his weight but he was a little underweight when I first bought him. He's on a rat pup once a week, I was trying to start him on two a week but he only took one and went on to attack the tweezers the second time round. I don't think he's approaching shed, he didn't do anything like this during his last shed. He seems okay around the eyes so far, I didn't notice any dents.

ok. i would get him to vets asap. don't know about IBD, and as far as i'm aware i think that can only be confirmed by liver biopsy or postmortem. but the vet should be able to give you an idea. How long have you had him now? fingers crossed for you let us know what happens and what vet says.

I hate saying this, but I can't actually afford to get him to a vet right now. Money's so tight as it is due to work/expenses and helping my parents out, and I know that if he dies from something that could've be cured I'll blame myself endlessly. I'm fearful of an IBD more than anything, because it can be sudden and is fatal. He hasn't done anything like stargazing before, so I know that something is terribly wrong. How often should I check on him do you think? I'm actually afraid of finding him dead =[

IBD isn't very common in royals but as Lee said not so much star gazing as cork screwing suggesting some kind of neurological problem ( almost an extreme case of what you can see in spider morphs)To be honest if you can't bring him to vets there isn't really anything you can do on your own. continue to care for him as you have as normal. handle as little as possible. and get him to vets when you can.

Should I not attempt to feed him? As he probably would have issues feeding anyway. I get paid at the end of the month, do you think he'd last that long?

8 most common causes of stargazing in snakes?

1. Viral infections such as paramyxovirus which typically attacks the neurological and respiratory systems of snakes. Typically viperids and colubrids are affected.
2. Inclusion Body Disease (IBD) which typically attacks the neurological, gastrointestinal and respiratory systems of boids (boas and pythons).
3. Bacterial infections such as acanthamoebic meningioencephalitis are often to blame as well.
4. Major organ dysfunction can also cause neurological problems.
5. Any sort of septic infections which can breach the blood-brain barrier.
6. Extreme temperature fluctuations.
7. Head injuries/trauma.
8. Exposure to toxins typically found via pest strips, cleaning products, mite sprays as well as any other number of environmental toxins can also cause various neurological problems.

In order to treat this condition properly, your veterinarian will undertake a thorough physical examination of your snake as well as take a detailed medical history (always bring your records with you to any appointment with your veterinarian). Diagnostic tests might include fecal exams, x-rays, as well as a complete pathology workup (ie bloodwork).

Okay, I'll try him again on his usual day then to see how he does. I'm trying to find a reptile specialised vet in my area but struggling, I'd rather take it to someone who knows what they're doing.

What are the temperatures in your viv like? How are they measured and how are they controlled?

Lee - I'm not, and I didn't know you could pay gradually. Perhaps I'll register with the reptile vet I found near me.

Blackecho - Because of the warm weather I'd had to turn off his heat mat, as it was gradually making the entire viv warmer than I felt good for him. At the moment he's got a heat mat at one end at an average of 28C, which I just realised is a little cool, but the issue I have is that his viv is stacked on top of my Corn's viv, so when I have her heat lamp on it makes his viv warm so I end up having to turn his mat off.

Just an update; Odin passed away in the last couple of hours. He's now buried beneath our willow tree, I'm distraught and can't help but blame myself, but at least he went quickly.

Thank you to everyone who helped me, it means alot.

Sorry for your loss, also sorry to hear he's now buried, if it was IBD (confirmed by PM) it'd have been good to let any shop/breeder you've been in contact with recently and bought him from know.

Should I warn them just in case? He deteriorated extremely quickly, so it's possible it might have been IBD couldn't it?

Also the habistat does control the temp, it turns on and off to maintain it which is annoying when attached to a lamp as it'd be nice to have it on all the time rather having it going on and off, but hey ho.

I made small spacers for my vivs just to allow the air to circulate.
Sorry to hear of your loss.
