I have a 3ft by 2ft vivarium with a ceramic heat lamp attached about 9 inches from the left wall, this is my hot side. The lamp is hooked upto a habistat dimmer thermostat and the probe is under the lamp. There is a metal guard around the light to stop snakey touching the bulb

I also have a thermometer measuring the heat under the lamp and I keep that at about 31-32c. I have 2-3 hides scattered around the viv making sure 1 is on the cold side and 1 is on the hot side.

A water bowl big enough for snake to submerge himself in on the cold side and an assortment of plastic ivy to give the place more decoration for me and more hiding places for him.

I use newspaper substrate as it's easy to clean out and replace.

Thats all I can think of right now :) In a rush to get to work but tried to get a post out

Yey another convert to the Royal side. I love my Royal and don't mind admitting it, he's shy, he wil only eat out of a metal tin and trys to bite me but I wouldn't change him for the world. They have a bad reputation feeding wise but its not that big a deal, it does them no harm even though we worry about them. The caresheet is great on here, I have a 2 foot viv with an almost 3 foot snake, I use a Infra Red heat bulb, guard, and dimming stat but ceramic heat bulb is just as good if not better. They need good heavy hides, they are strong and end up wearing them as hats, oh and prepare to have to sort out a viv when they go on an explore they trash their vivs.

Have you ever held one yet? If not you'll be so amazed how different they are to your corns, Duke is so strong and the muscle in him is amazing, and they have a layer of fat too and very silky scales, not as rigid as corns.

hey well , i have been lookin on preloved and came across a royal thats perfect , hes 3 years old , good feeder and is 3ft , she thinks hes fully grown , but he eats a rat every 3 weeks or so , sheds well and she is selling as she is expecting a baby and cant care for him like she would like to . well we have a viv thats empty as the corns are too small so its perfect....hehe! my missus is even tempted (shes clearly thrown the "no more snakes for a year" rule has thrown out the window) im waiting to recieve pics of him (which hopefully my missus is fall in love with) and go form there . just worried about the set up . ive held and albino and he was just a curled up little ball hehe! i loved them then and altho i have read how bad they feed , its just wat they do and no point worrying about it if they arent loosing weight . ooo im feeling excited already!! hehe
Stumpy , i havent called them yet but i may do tomorro :) so ur setting a viv up ready :)
Lotabob ur duke sounds like a right little character! love the pics of him too!

They are characters, its lovley been on here and hearing all about the different little characters about. Duke is a loon but he's just amazing, I think the more specific their needs the more you grow attached to them.
I would say at 3 years old he won't get much if any bigger and a 3 week gap between feeds is about a week too long in my book but you can monitor his weight and make any ajustments to that though been a royal maybe thats the feed schedule chosen by the snake. They do curl up into a ball but once they settle to your house they rarely do it, Duke straightens out when I try picking him out, its like taking scaffold pole out of the viv.

I think they work out its really easy to pick a ball out of the viv but really difficult to take a scaffold pole out.

oh man the more i hear about ur stories the more i want one! i thought three weeks was abit too long too , but hopefully if we go see him we can ask her abit more about it . she says he hasnt missed any feeds on that schedule at the min tho which sounds very promising! im gettin majorly excited! but we are going away for three weeks in september already gotta pay boarding costs for kyle and kodi lol , and the new guy if we get him before , my missus is trying to be the voice of reason but she said how tempting this little dude is , the woman said he should be fully grown at that now , so it would be perfect for the viv i would imagine .

Good luck Laws - a royal is a positive life change - you will never regret it!

I'm actually trying to write this with my corn snake in my jumper having a good look around, so if there are any grammatical errors I do apologize.
Good on you for giving a second hand snake a home. It always makes me happy when I hear of people re-housing "unwanted" snakes rather than just buying a baby. There are plenty of snakes out there that are surplus to requirements and in need of a little love and affection.
