First time in 12 Royals and 2 years of keeping that I've had a snake bleed during shed! Was very upset, gave her a bath and used some cotton buds to remove any stuck bloodied shed.
Had concerns it might be a burn but fairly sure it's not now, just a very bad shed. Missed her turning blue and didn't provide any more humidity, feel awful! |

Cleopatra, Annoying because I was hoping she'd reach breeding weight this year, now she'll probably stop feeding. :( |

Yeah looks like scale rot to me from that picture but the vet will have a much better idea what's what as I just cant imagine there would be the conditions for scale rot as your setups are always clean and dry, maybe something else at play. |

Vet said it was a bacterial infection which may have been caused by using cheap Aubiose subtrate he recommended changing to newspaper, apparently when the snakes shed they build up a layer of fluid between old and new skin, bugs are attracted to this so it often happens during sheds. Got some Baytril to help and gotta give her a salt bath and vaseline. |

Actually the vet gave me a good idea, said to buy a few yards of lining paper which is apparently very absorbant and can be changed quickly and easiler, I think I'll give that a try :) less bloody substrate getting stuck in my carpet too! :D |

ye thats better than newspaper. no ink, its like the fish and chip shop paper. i just prefer using substrate as i hate having a hard matress, so in my mind the snakes prefer the substrate to get comfy on |

Sorry to here this Glad your getting it sorted
This is what I'm using at the moment Fits lovely in v70 tubs
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251121884000
I was using aubiose but moved to the paper off cuts there's about 600 pieces in a 10kg ream
Only down side is when the royal pees and poos It gets soaked and until you check on them they have to sit on it
Surrey pets do a 150 litre aspen bulk buy sack Maybe something to check out
So after reading this I'm not sure I'm going back to aubiose Hope your royal recovers quickly for you |

saying that though, think of the amount of royal owner who do use aubiose and dont ever have any problems. myself i wouldnt stop using it on all the snakes, i would just not use it with sed snake. my female had a problem with getting pieces into her mouth and that causing RI symptoms. i now have her on kitchen roll but still have the male on aubiose as hes never had problems. although will be using megazorb on both when it turns up |

Aye I've always used it and never had any problems, I'm sure it's very unlikely but to be honest only reason I was using the damn stuff in the first place is because I thought it was better for them than newspaper :/
I hate the stuff it gets all over my room and carpet !! lol |

I would say its been a freak occurrence, your setups are not in any way breeding grounds for bugs. Possibly a splinter and a slither through a freshly laid poop or something, something that you could never plan for or prevent. |
